School MealRemindersDistrict Back-to-School Information for 2026-2027

Dear Parents and Guardians:

On behalf of Chartwells, Abington School District's foodservice providers for grades K-12, we wanted to share a few reminders about our foodservice program this school year.

If any student has a question or concern about their breakfast or lunch, they are encouraged to bring it forward to the Chartwells cafeteria team. Additionally, parents/guardians can share any concerns or feedback directly with Ms. Chenille Traylor, Director of Dining Services, at 215-884-4700 x2220/2355, or chenilletraylor@abington.k12.pa.us.

Meal Cost and Free/Reduced-Price Meal Applications Meal Cost and Free/Reduced-Price Meal Applications

For the 2026-2027 school year, free breakfast is available for all students. Lunch costs $3.10 for elementary students and $3.45 for secondary students.

Your student may qualify for free or reduced meals this school year, based on your income or state benefits received. It is not too late to apply, and you can apply at any point during the school year should your family's situation change.

We encourage all families, regardless of income, to complete and submit a short, confidential school meal application to determine if a student is eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunches. Parents/guardians can submit the application online. It's an easy and confidential way to ensure students stay well-nourished at school.

Contact the Student Services Department at 215-881-2505 if you have questions or need a paper copy of the application.

Using MySchoolBucks you can:

  • Add funds to your student’s account balance to purchase school meals or a-la-carte items
  • View meal balances & cafeteria purchases
  • Receive low balance alerts

Get started in four easy steps:

  1. Download the mobile app or visit myschoolbucks.com
  2. Create your free account
  3. Add your student
  4. Add funds to your student’s meal account

For additional information, please review the Superintendent's Administrative Procedure (SAP) regarding Food Service. If you have any questions about getting started with MySchoolBucks, call 855-832-5226.

Please rest assured that no matter the status of a student’s MySchoolBucks account balance, no student will ever be denied breakfast or lunch, and they will receive a full meal. Please see the section below, which outlines what is considered a full meal versus an a-la-carte item.

What’s Included in a School Meal? What’s Included in a School Meal?

By participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP), Chartwells serves breakfast and lunch following the federal meal pattern guidelines, including those for nutrition and dietary specifications.

Build a Breakfast

To be considered a full breakfast meal, students MUST select at least three food items, including at least half of a cup of fruit, such as an apple or an orange. For the best nutrition, four items are recommended.

To ensure a student's selection is charged as a full breakfast meal, students should use the following guidelines to meet the required three-item minimum:

  1. Select at least one half of a cup of fruit (this is considered one item).
  2. Pick an additional serving of fruit, or an item from some other food category, such as grains, protein or milk (this is considered the second item).
  3. Select any additional food item (this is considered the third item).

Build a Lunch

To be considered a full lunch meal, students MUST select items from at least three food groups, including at least half of a cup of fruits or vegetables. For the best nutrition, selecting something from all five food groups is recommended.

To ensure a student's selection is charged as a full lunch meal, students should use the following guidelines to meet the required three-food-group minimum:

  1. Select at least one half of a cup of fruits or vegetables (this is considered one food group).
  2. Pick an additional item from any of the following food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein or milk (this is considered the second food group).
  3. Pick an item from a food group that is different than either of the two previously selected above. (this is considered the third food group).

Please note that a-la-carte items such as juice, chips, cookies and ice-cream are not included in the meal price. These items cost extra, and a student's MySchoolBucks account will be charged accordingly. Please see our website for itemized pricing of a-la-carte items.

Additionally, if a student's lunch does not meet the above guidelines, all items will be charged individually rather than the meal price of $3.10 (elementary) or $3.45 (secondary). These guidelines also apply to those receiving a free or reduced-price lunch. Whenever possible, Chartwells cafeteria staff will do their best to remind students of any items that might be missing from their meal.
