A Note from Principal Reilly
Hello Hamline Families,
Spring has sprung and with it comes renewed energy for what the warmer seasons bring. I hope you all enjoyed time with your children over spring break. As wonderful as a little break is, we always miss the kids. We are in the last couple of months of school with lots coming up. The third through fifth graders will be taking the MCA test, (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment), this month which is a time to assess where the children are at in meeting standards. Please make sure they go to bed early!
Though MCA's give us a snapshot of how students are doing, it does not tell us about all the amazing strengths of students that can never be measured by a test. I have seen enormous growth this year across the board and as I review our ongoing data, students are growing in reading and math at high rates. The majority of students are demonstrating typical and aggressive growth which guides us in how we are impacting student learning. It is important for us to progress monitor throughout the year to make sure we are meeting students' needs and adjusting and adapting accordingly. We take our role of educating all students very seriously.
Teachers have been participating all year in training around the Science of Reading in order to bring the best reading instruction to students. They are also learning new math and writing curriculums, and our math scores have never been better. I am very proud to work alongside some pretty amazing and committed educators. Please help support this growth by having students read each night. Your student should be coming home with book bags to support practice at home. Our amazing library person, Beth Stein, is giving out book bags each week.
As you keep reading through the Newsletter, you will see upcoming events such as STEM night and our annual Spring Festival. It is always fun to see families attend these events as it gives us time to just connect as a community. I will also be holding a Coffee with the Principal budget meeting from 9:30-10:15 on April 18th to discuss how money will be prioritized for the next school year. It is important to hear from you in this process. If you can attend, we will be meeting in our Family Resource Room. There will be coffee!
As always, my door is open to discuss any ideas, concerns or issues related to your child's education. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
In Partnership,
Principal Reilly
Volunteers Needed: 5th Grade Biztown Visit
Our 5th graders are visting BizTown on April 22nd, and we hope you can join us.
If you are interested, please contact our counselor, Annette Nelson: annette.nelson@spps.org
About Biztown:
While exploring and working in JA BizTown, students have the chance to discover careers, build financial skills, collaborate with classmates, exercise civic duties, invest in the community, and more! With both in-person and virtual options, it’s accessible for students across our region.
The in-person experience takes place in a simulated city at our St Paul facility. Several weeks of classroom learning culminates in a day-long visit where students are paired with volunteers and work in one of 18 JA BizTown shops.
Through educational lessons, immersive activities, and active participation in a simulated economy, it’s an experience they draw from for the rest of their lives!
Ensuring access to programming is central to our mission, which is why we now have JA BizTown Adventures, which offers the same learning concepts in a virtual space. If students can’t make it to our learning labs, we bring the learning to them in partnership with their educators!

MCA Testing Information
MCA & MTAS/Alt MCA Testing 2024-2025
Each spring, the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) or the Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS) are provided to students in mathematics (grades 3-8 and 11), and reading (grades 3-8 and 10).
The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) or the Alternate MCA is provided to students in science (grades 5, 8 and in high school upon completing biology).
Most students take the MCA; however, some students who receive special education services and meet eligibility requirements take the MTAS or Alternate MCA. These tests provide a snapshot of student learning of the Minnesota Academic Standards.
The MCA and MTAS/Alt MCA are used to meet federal and state legislative requirements. The Minnesota Department of Education and SPPS can use results to look across student groups, schools and districts to evaluate equitable learning opportunities for all students.
Assessments are designed to provide information about student learning, but there is no single assessment that can provide the full perspective of what a student has learned. These assessments provide one data point that should be considered in the context of additional evidence of student learning.
Students will take the MCA or MTAS/Alt MCA between March 3 - May 9, 2025.
Testing at Hamline Elementary begins April 15th.
If you have questions about your student’s participation in statewide assessments, reach out to your school’s principal.
For more information on the MCA and MTAS please go to: SPPS MCA & MTAS/Alt MCA Family Testing Information website:
