A Note From the Principal
As we kick off the 2024-25 school year, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for actively participating in our Safety Week, which took place during the week of August 19th. Your engagement in learning about our safety protocols was invaluable.
During Safety Week, we covered crucial topics including:
- The Standard Response Protocol (SRP), our comprehensive emergency response protocol.
- Safe2Help, our new anonymous reporting tool designed to enhance school safety.
- The importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a safe school environment—reminding us that it takes all of us working together to ensure everyone feels secure.
Your involvement demonstrates the strong commitment we share to making our school community a safe and supportive place for all.
Families, if you would like to learn more about the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and the “I Love U Guys” Foundation, you can find additional resources on the foundation’s website.
Additionally, with the start of the 2024-25 school year, our district has partnered with Safe2Help Illinois, a statewide school safety program. This new resource replaces our previous See Something, Say Something tool and provides a 24/7 helpline, a free mobile app, and a dedicated website for reporting safety concerns. Families can learn more by visiting www.Safe2Helpil.com.
Thank you once again for your partnership as we work together to create a safe and welcoming school community. Your dedication to safety makes all the difference!
Speaking of safety, our morning drop-off and afternoon pickup have been running fairly smoothly. We appreciate your assistance in making it safe and quick for students, staff, and families.
A few key things to remember:
- Please do not execute a three-point turn in the middle school driveway. This is very dangerous.
- Cars should not be entering the parking lot/bus area prior to school starting. Students should NEVER be dropped off among the buses and in the side parking lot.
- Please ensure your child is ready to exit the vehicle when you pull up to drop off. This keeps the line running smoothly.
- Do not exit your vehicle in the front circle. If you need to assist your child, please pull into one of the parking spaces at the end of the drive. The adults outside are also happy to open a door (if you have enabled child locks) upon request.
As always, I am available for questions, concerns, or encouragements about our school. You can reach me at marie.rothermel@lz95.org or 847-719-3300.

Last week, students applied for different roles, some of which have transitioned to after-school clubs. If your child is interested in one of our yearlong leadership opportunities, expect to receive more details in the coming days.
Smart Watches
Please keep in mind that elementary students should not be utilizing the texting or calling features of a smart watch during the school day. During the past few weeks, we have had an uptick of students utilizing their smart watch features during the day. This has included parents texting their children during school hours. These devices fall under LZ School Board policy.
7:190 Student Behavior
Using or possessing an electronic paging device. Using a cellular telephone, video recording device, personal digital assistant (PDA), or other electronic device in any manner that disrupts the educational environment or violates the rights of others, including using the device to take photographs in locker rooms or bathrooms, cheat, or otherwise violate student conduct rules. Prohibited conduct specifically includes, without limitation, creating, sending, sharing, viewing, receiving, or possessing an indecent visual depiction of oneself or another person through the use of a computer, electronic communication device, or cellular phone. Unless otherwise banned under this policy or by the Building Principal, all electronic devices must be kept powered-off or silenced during the regular school day unless: (a) the supervising teacher grants permission; (b) use of the device is provided in a student's individualized education program (IEP); (c) it is used during the student's lunch period, or (d) it is needed in an emergency that threatens the safety of students, staff, or other individuals.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Parent Workshop
Come Join Us! During this session, Jacqueline Rhew, LCPC, CADC, will lead an interactive discussion on interventions and strategies to promote active engagement in school and sports. Parents will learn methods to build their child’s confidence, enhance problem-solving skills, and foster a growth mindset. Special emphasis will be placed on supporting students who have struggled with anxiety, behavioral issues, or pain management concerns. These challenges can often impact engagement, academic and athletic potential, work completion, and the development of healthy relationships in school and sports environments.
