Kindergarten Newsletter
English Version February 2026
Issue #5 (2025-2026)
We hope you all had a refreshing break and enjoyed plenty of fun family gatherings during the holiday period. It was wonderful to see our students return to campus with such renewed energy.
February was particularly special as we galloped into a new lunar cycle. Happy Year of the Horse! We hope this new year has started with the strength and vitality that this zodiac sign represents. Throughout the month, our classrooms were alive with the spirit of the Lunar New Year as students explored cultural traditions and shared how they celebrated this auspicious time with their loved ones.
As we look back on the month, this edition of our newsletter captures the highlights of our February journey. From the "Year of the Horse" festivities to the deep progress made in our various units of inquiry, it was a month defined by curiosity and community spirit. We are so proud of the momentum our students built as they dove back into their studies with such focus.
Thank you for your continued support and for sharing in the joy of our school life. We look forward to all that the spring term has in store!
Update from KIS
Ten Kingston students who are enrolled in the SDGs Tech Innovation Lab extra-curricular class took part in the Asia-Pacific Youth AI Innovation Open. These students formed four teams representing Kingston in the Creative Invention category of the Primary School Division. The event was held at the Nanyang Technological University, where they competed against hundreds of students from schools in various countries across Asia. The students developed innovative projects including a landslide early warning device, a disinfecting and deodorising smart shoe box, an intelligent clothes drying rack, and a toothbrush sterilisation device.
During the competition, they delivered confident, bilingual presentations and demonstrations of their inventions. Demonstrating excellent teamwork, they responded to judges' questions fluently in both Chinese and English, receiving high praise from the panel. Their efforts resulted in awards of eight gold medals and two silver medals, and they advanced to the finals. As one of the representatives of Asia, they have been invited to participate in the UK Oxford International Competition Final in July 2026. This achievement is a significant accomplishment and a proud moment for Kingston.
In School Activities
2 Year Old Class Animal Carnival
Not to be outdone in the spirit of celebration, our 2 Year Old Classes hosted their very own Animal Carnival. It was a heart-melting sight to see our learners arriving dressed in a wild array of animal costumes. The day was filled with laughter as the children played games together, practicing their social skills and coordination through animal-themed play. Seeing their confidence grow as they paraded in their costumes was a highlight for all the teachers involved!
Chinese New Year Celebrations
Our campus was transformed into a sea of red and gold as we came together for our spectacular Chinese New Year celebrations. The energy was electric as the rhythmic beat of drums heralded the arrival of the dragon and lion dances, a performance that left students wide-eyed with wonder. Our talented students took to the stage for their own class performances, showcasing their hard work through traditional songs and dances. To add to the festive spirit, the air was filled with the "pop" of firecracker balloons, mimicking ancient traditions to ward off bad luck as we galloped into the Year of the Horse.
The celebration continued with a more hands-on experience at our very own school flower market, where students practiced their independence by choosing beautiful New Year decorations to take home. No festival is complete without a feast, and the children delighted in sampling traditional snacks, including savory turnip cake and sweet, sticky New Year cake (nian gao). To top off a truly memorable day, every student received a red packet, symbolizing the community’s shared wishes for a prosperous and happy year ahead.
World Vision Red Packet Donation Drive
We are incredibly proud of the compassion shown by our school community during our World Vision Red Packet donation drive. By sharing a portion of their Lunar New Year blessings, our students have turned a personal tradition into a powerful act of global citizenship. This initiative provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to reflect on the importance of empathy and helping those in need. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to every family who contributed to this meaningful cause; your generosity ensures that we are starting the Year of the Horse by making a tangible, positive impact on the lives of others.
2 Year Old Class Car Exploration
As part of their exciting new Transportation Unit, our 2 Year Old Class swapped their toy cars for the real thing! The children had the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with a real car, sparking a sense of wonder and curiosity. With wide eyes, our youngest learners explored the different parts of the vehicle, from the "round, black wheels" to the shiny headlights. The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly the chance to sit in the driver’s seat—hands on the steering wheel—and experiment with the various buttons and gadgets. This hands-on experience provided a fantastic sensory foundation for their learning, helping them connect the vocabulary they are learning in class to the bustling world of transport they see every day on the streets of Hong Kong.
Field Trips
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show
One of the absolute highlights of February was our Kindergarten trip to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show. As part of KidsFest! 2026, everyone was spellbound as Eric Carle’s vibrant world leaped off the page and onto the stage. The theater was filled with gasps of delight as over 75 magical, large-scale puppets brought beloved stories like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, 10 Little Rubber Ducks and The Very Busy Spider to life. It was a wonderful introduction to the magic of live theater and a fantastic way to spark a lifelong love for storytelling.
4 & 5 Year Old Classes Trip to Fa Hui Park Flower Market
Our 4 and 5 Year Old classes also took their New Year celebrations on the road with a vibrant visit to the Flower Market at Fa Hui Park. The children were immersed in a sea of colour and fragrance as they wandered through the stalls, admiring the stunning array of orchids, peach blossoms and narcissus flowers. It was a true sensory experience; beyond the beautiful flowers, the students enjoyed discovering the variety of unique festive products that make the Lunar New Year so special in Hong Kong. The highlight for many, however, was seeing the colourful windmills spinning in the breeze—a traditional symbol of turning one’s luck. Every child returned to school proudly carrying their own beautiful windmill, a perfect souvenir of a day spent celebrating community, culture, and the arrival of the Year of the Horse.
Grade Level Updates 📣
In the weeks leading up to our mid-month break, the entire school was a hive of activity as our classes prepared for the arrival of the Year of the Horse. Students delved deep into the rich traditions of the Lunar New Year, exploring the folklore and cultural significance behind the zodiac. From practicing their finest calligraphy for "Fai Chun" banners to crafting intricate paper cuttings and lanterns, every classroom was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Chinese heritage. Beyond the arts, our students practiced traditional greetings and learned about the symbolic meanings behind various festive foods and customs. It was wonderful to see our learners embracing these traditions with such curiosity and respect, ensuring they were fully prepared to welcome a year of prosperity and good fortune.
