Scholastic Book Fair coming in December!
The Scholastic Book Fair will take place in the GVS library throughout the first week of December.
From December 1st-5th between the hours of 8:10-3:30, students can shop 'til they drop! Scholastic even offers a cash-free way of paying. Parents can "prepare for the fair' by setting up an e-wallet ahead of time, here.
Volunteers are needed for this event so that teachers and staff can tend to their students. If you are willing and able, Mrs. McFarland will love you forever! Please sign up for a slot or two on the sign-up genius, here, and karma will surely repay you in kind.
Happy reading!
We have had 51 students--almost 20% of GVS students become GVS Math Mavericks this year! Go Hawks!

Quick, Simple Ways to Build Strong Readers (Grades K–5)
1. Read Together Every Day (10–15 minutes)
Read aloud to your child—even strong readers benefit.
Take turns reading pages or chapters.
Use expression to model fluent reading.
2. Talk About the Book
“What do you think will happen next?”
“Why did the character do that?”
“What was the problem and how was it solved?”
3. Help With New Words
Encourage your child to try the first sound.
Ask: “Does that look right? Does it make sense in the sentence?”
If stuck after a few tries, give the word to keep reading moving.
4. Build Vocabulary Naturally
Briefly explain new words as you read.
Connect them to everyday life:
“‘Gigantic’ means very big—like that tall building downtown.”
5. Encourage All Types of Reading
Chapter books, picture books, comics, magazines, recipes—it all counts.
Let kids choose books they enjoy to build motivation.
6. Reread Favorites
Rereading improves fluency, confidence, and understanding.
7. Make Reading Part of the Routine
Set aside a consistent time and a cozy spot.
Keep books in baskets, in the car, or on nightstands.
8. Build Knowledge of the World
Read nonfiction about topics your child loves.
Visit libraries, nature centers, or parks.
Watch short educational videos together and talk about them.
9. Celebrate Effort
Praise specific actions: “I like how you stopped and fixed that word!”
Keep reading fun and stress-free.

We are all wishing Mrs. Carey well in her recovery!
We miss her!
