A Message from the Principals
by Caitlin Bianchi, Allen Brook School Principal
Students and adults at Allen Brook School and at Williston Central School are focusing on these schoolwide agreements throughout the school year and students are continuing to do a great job of knowing and living by these agreements.
This week, I want to highlight how we “take care of this place” at Allen Brook School. Earlier this year I was in a second grade classroom and I heard a teacher say “Thank you for taking care of this place by putting your materials back where they belong.” This made me think about all of the routines that teachers help students develop in their classrooms around taking care of this place. Part of our first six weeks of school is devoted to learning together things like, where do you put your finished work, how do we store our writing notebooks, what do you do with a book in the library when you are done looking at it, how do you take care of your paintbrush in art class, where do we stack our chairs at the end of the day, and where do we keep our snacks. All of these things contribute to maintaining a productive learning environment and they don’t happen without lots of methodical practice.
You may have noticed that we are trying something new with our kindergarten lockers this year. Student belongings really don’t fit well in the lockers, so we’re trying a new approach by having hooks installed on the front of the lockers. Students are taking care of this place by using this new system of storing personal belongings and keeping our hallways accessible and clean.
We’re also working on helping students to grow their awareness of helping to keep our school clean by noticing what’s around them. We’re practicing and recognizing opportunities to do things like picking up the wrapper that someone left on a cafeteria table or the paper that fell on the floor in the hallway.
We are fortunate to have lots of adults in our community who also help us take care of this place and make our surroundings joyful and inviting. Our ML teaching team has helped us with our project to hang flags representing all of the home countries of our students’ families who have attended ABS in the past 3-4 years. If you haven’t noticed this wonderful display, look up the next time you enter the building through the front door. This summer we installed bulletin boards along the main hallway and our art teacher, Ms. McCracken, has been adorning the boards with beautiful art work that our students are creating with her. The addition of the new bulletin boards has really helped expand the display capabilities.
We also have folks “taking care of this place” outside of our building. You may have noticed the mums and pumpkins that were recently added to the perennial garden in front of the school. The maintenance of that lovely little garden that greets us at the door each day is led by a community volunteer, Fred Erdman. We also currently have underway the PLAY27 campaign run by the PLAY27 Committee of parents, Allen Brook School staff, and community volunteers in collaboration with Williston Families As Partners (WFAP). The mission of PLAY27 is “to build a new, inclusive playground at Allen Brook School where imagination, movement, and community thrive.” We are so grateful to have this collaborative effort happening this year. Of course, we also want to thank our maintenance and custodial and grounds staff who take care of our Allen Brook spaces (both outside and inside) every day for us.
Allen Brook is a great place to be and I look forward to continuing to take care of this place with our faculty, staff, and students.
