Message From Our Superintendent | May 2, 2025 Message From Our Superintendent | May 2, 2025

May is here, and once again, we’re preparing to engage in meaningful and rich experiences that celebrate the many gifts and talents of our students and staff. Most importantly, we are preparing to honor the Class of 2025 during their commencement ceremony on May 19. This milestone marks the beginning of their post-secondary journey, and I can’t wait to see what is next.

Alongside our seniors, students across the District will be celebrating important promotions. From our rising kindergarteners, to fifth graders transitioning to middle school, and our newest freshmen preparing to enter UCHS, each step forward is worthy of recognition. Please see the Key Dates section below for more details on school-specific celebrations.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, reminding us of the importance of well-being and, yes, joy, an essential component of a healthy and vibrant life. In our District, we are committed to meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of every learner. We also acknowledge that the current landscape of public education presents many challenges. Navigating this space demands that we lean into our values and maintain a humanizing approach to education. Supporting our children requires a shared commitment. I am deeply grateful to our families for your continued partnership, as school and home must work hand in hand.

One powerful example of that joy and purpose in action was our 5th annual Growing Together event, which was simply amazing! This student-led gathering focused on the sustainability efforts of BWMS students and included inspiring contributions from learners across the District—from PreK through 12th grade. It was a joyful showcase of our students' brilliance and, even more importantly, the real impact their learning is having on our community.

A special thank you to our sustainability facilitator, Anne Cummings, for embracing and uplifting our students’ vision over the past five years. And kudos to the many teachers and staff members who volunteered to make the event such a success.

5th Annual Growing Together

In other news, Prop U construction projects are well underway. You may have noticed new playgrounds and enhanced, secure entrances at several schools. This summer, construction will begin on new entrances at Flynn Park and Jackson Park, with completion planned for the fall. We will be ready to welcome students and staff back in August, with a few temporary adjustments. A sneak peek is included below, and families from those buildings will receive more information during upcoming Title I meetings.

As we move into the final weeks of the school year, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on just how much has been accomplished—and to celebrate the growth, resilience, and spirit that defines our school community. Thank you for your unwavering support, and I look forward to ending the year strong, together.

Show Me the World Coffee

I’m thrilled to share that Show Me The World Coffee is now available in 15 Schnucks stores across the St. Louis region and Metro East until May 20!

More than just coffee, this project represents the power of purpose-driven community action. Each purchase helps fund international learning, entrepreneurship, and workforce programs through the Show Me The World Project, just like the recent experiences of our UCHS students who traveled to Costa Rica to expand their global perspective.

You’ll find the coffee on the Diversity Springboard display near the store entrance (not in the usual coffee aisle). This is a limited-time trial, and community support is key to making it permanent!

UCHS Seniors & Build-A-Bear Workshop Visit JP

Full-circle moments at Jackson Park!

Our kindergarteners were thrilled to receive a visit from their Believe Room sponsor, Build-A-Bear Workshop — and even more excited to meet 10 UCHS seniors (and Jackson Park alums!) who came to read and gift them a special “reading buddy.”

But the surprise didn’t stop there! Our seniors got a heartwarming twist when their former teachers surprised them with Build-A-Bears dressed as graduates.
