Strong Children or Broken Adults - It's Our Choice
Below is an article I wrote about something I consider incredibly important - kids learning to be able to handle difficult things without giving up; and ultimately growing into adults who have a chance of succeeding despite the challenges of life.
In recent years, schools across the country have experienced a massive increase in students' inability to take ownership of their actions and of parents who will not allow their kids to face consequences for their mistakes. This leads to students making the same mistakes over and over which, of course, is not what anybody wants.
Please read the article below when you have a 5-10 minutes. I based it on the research of people far more intelligent than me. I hope you find it helpful in some way.
Thank you.

Washington DC Trip
Get ready for an amazing trip...
DMS 8th graders will once again be traveling to the Nation's Capital in March of 2027. This is an outstanding trip; students and staff alike always come back buzzing about the experience. It is a truly once in a lifetime opportunity for our students.
But it is expensive, and the cost has been a barrier for many of our families. To help in some small way, I am sending out notification of next year's trip earlier than ever before so that families may put aside a little money incrementally. It's not too soon for 6th grade families to start thinking about this, as well. We are hopeful that with early notification (and we are considering some possible fundraising opportunities), more students will be able to attend.
Many families this year have given the trip as a gift from relatives, made kids earn some money and other creative ideas.
The cost for 2027 is $1,287 per student.
We are hoping for two buses next year, which would mean an additional 40-50 students able to attend.
Please contact Mr. Tucker (mtucker@dcrsd.org) or me (gdesto@dcrsd.org) if you have any questions...and see the beautiful informational poster below created by Lesli Patrock, one of our talented and creative DMS alums!
More information will be forthcoming.
