This week the counseling department provided an SEL digital lesson on Trusted Adults. Although we know our students have trusted adults outside of Mears, our focus is to ensure that students have trusted adults in the school building as well. Students took a survey and we are so excited to report that 89% of our students names at least one Mears Trusted Adult.

ARCHERY ARCHERY

Session one of archery finished strong. Students progressed from missing the target altogether to stopping zombies, pinpointing three inch letters spread across the target to spell MEARS, and popping balloons. The next session of archery starts in November.

Expectations for Bus Riders Expectations for Bus Riders

zoom_out_map

Bus riding is not a right, but a privilege. When providing transportation for students within the MMS attendance area (zone), the district’s responsibility is clearly defined as to provide a ride from the student’s assigned bus stop to school, and back to that student’s assigned bus stop. Bus stop assignments are determined by a student’s verified address. Daycare or after school care placement is not a consideration.

Riding a bus safely entails:

  • Sitting in an assigned seat, facing forward, keeping the aisles clear
  • Using indoor voices
  • Eating or drinking on the bus is not permitted.
  • Listening to music using personal earbuds only.
  • Respectfully following the directions given by the bus driver

October Character Trait: Kindness October Character Trait: Kindness

zoom_out_map

Mears staff will be looking to recognize students who demonstrate a commitment to kindness.

Kindness: being generous with others, giving your time and talent to support those who are in need. Kindness is being compassionate, which means to really be there for someone, listening intently to their suffering or just sitting with them and silently supporting them.

Congratulations to Kiera, Elena, and Jacqueline for finishing 1st! 2nd place went to Clayton, Ryder and Romney!

Make sure Chromebooks are charged nightly and check in with your student about supplies. Paper and pencils are seemingly growing legs.

Mears Weekly Attendance Rate Mears Weekly Attendance Rate

Attendance is a major focus for Mears Middle School. Did you know every absence, excused or unexcused, is a learning opportunity lost and can have significant impacts on a student’s success in school and life. A student who misses 10% or more of their school days, which amounts to 18 or more days in a school year—or just two days a month—for any reason is considered chronically absent. Chronically absent students are more likely to fall behind in reading and math and less likely to graduate from high school. Addressing chronic absenteeism and developing good attendance habits is a solvable problem for which we all share responsibility.
