DISTRICTUPDATE March 5, 2025

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff,

As we step into March, a month filled with academic engagement, students have an exciting stretch of learning ahead. With hands-on Science projects, in-depth book reports, and daily interactions with their teachers, the next six weeks provide a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of key concepts. Parent-Teacher Conferences on April 4th offer an excellent chance to discuss your child’s progress and goals. Additionally, spring brings a host of school events, including dynamic drama and musical performances, showcasing the incredible talents of our students. Your support and involvement make a difference—we look forward to celebrating their achievements with you!

SCHOOL BUDGET

Planning for the 2025-2026 school year budget is well underway, and we are navigating challenges as we strive to maintain quality programming amid shifts in state and federal education funding. As home valuations rise, state subsidies decrease, impacting resources available for student programs. Balancing financial realities with our commitment to enriching student experiences requires thoughtful decision-making. As we plan next year’s school budget, a projection of our enrollment will allow us to plan more effectively. Parents can help through early registration of any child who will be entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, or moving into our community this Fall (see below). We also encourage community members to stay informed by attending upcoming School Committee/Board meetings and participating in the budget process before the June vote.

NEW, USER-FRIENDLY WEBSITES & MOBILE APP COMING

I am excited to share that Saco Schools is currently working toward upgraded websites designed to be more user-friendly, visually engaging, and accessible for all. This transition to a new platform will enhance how we communicate with families, ensuring you have quick and easy access to the information you need.

One of the most significant improvements will be the integration of our websites with social platforms and a mobile app, giving parents real-time updates, school notifications, event reminders, and important announcements right at their fingertips. The mobile app will serve as a convenient hub for school calendars, lunch menus, and more—making it easier than ever to stay connected to your child’s education. Stay tuned for the unveiling of the new websites and mobile app this Spring.

COURSE OFFERINGS

As parents and students (grades 5-11) map out their academic courses, unified arts, and school athletic and organized club selections for next year, we encourage families to spend some time learning about the numerous opportunities available within our schools. Please contact your child’s Guidance Counselor and/or review the options available at your school.

Connecting Science, Wellness, and Life Skills: A Hands-On Learning Experience Connecting Science, Wellness, and Life Skills: A Hands-On Learning Experience

Saco Middle School student Bentley Day and Mrs. Marshall accompanied Mrs. Howard to Hannaford to purchase supplies for the upcoming Food Group lesson in Wellness class. This lesson will connect to the Sebago team’s Science Energy unit by exploring various energy transformations in cooking, including thermal, kinetic, and mechanical energy, through the preparation of quesadillas—a meal that incorporates all five food groups.

Bentley is part of the COAST program, a special needs program at SMS. He has been working toward applying his skills in real-life settings. Recognizing an opportunity for meaningful cross-curricular collaboration, Mrs. Howard and Mrs. Frey have worked together to integrate their respective curriculums in a way that supports Bentley’s learning while enhancing the overall educational experience.

NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION UPDATE NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Our New School Construction project continues to hit important landmarks for our two new schools: Saco Primary School (Pre-K/K) and Saco Elementary School (grades 1-5). Members of the City’s Planning Board and the public took a chilly site walk on the morning of February 11th to see areas of the property that would be a part of the first stage of tree cutting. A public hearing regarding the first stage of tree cutting took place on February 18th. Design features and specifications for the interior and exterior of the building continue to move forward.
