Frequently Asked Questions
We have had questions that have been asked, and hope this will help with some of the answers:
1. It is my child's birthday, can I bring in something to celebrate?
Yes! You can either have your child bring in cupcakes and juice/water pouches, or you can take them to the front office for us to deliver to the classroom. The items must be store bought and sealed. Students in the class will have a small party at the end of the day before dismissal.
Pizzas are not allowed for birthday celebrations. Please do not have pizza delivered to the school.
2. Can I bring lunch or have lunch delivered for my child?
Unfortunately, we do not have enough office staff to deliver lunches.
3. Can I eat lunch with my child?
We are working on creating a schedule for families to come in and eat lunch with their child. Right now, the cafeteria size is our biggest issue. The cafeteria is small and we have no extra tables during our lunch time. Stay tuned for more information about this!
4. Is it too late to sign up for the before/after school program?
While some grade levels are full, it is not to late to sign up. Please reach out to:
Ash Ayers for grades K-2: ashayers@gisd.org
Synethia Dorsey for grades 3-4: synethiadorsey@gisd.org
5. What time is my student considered absent from school?
Our official attendance time is 9:15am. If a student comes in after that time, they will be counted absent unless they come with a doctor's note. We do not accept students without a doctor's note after 9:15am.
6. What time is my child considered tardy to school?
The bell rings at 8:15am. If your child is not in school at that time, and they come between 8;15-9:15am, they are considered tardy and MUST be signed in at the front office.

We are a Capturing Kids Hearts campus!
At Austin Elementary, we believe in teaching the whole child. Each month, we will teach about different character traits through Capturing Kids Hearts. For January, the character trait is to Respect.
Through Capturing Kids Hearts, we have been recognized as a National Showcase School--only 400 schools out of 40,000 schools have received this designation!!
Read below for more information about Capturing Kids Hearts and how you can help at home!
Austin Elementary is a Stronger Connections Grant school!
The 2024-2026 Stronger Connections Grant (SCG) was awarded to 98 public school districts, including Galveston ISD, and open enrollment charter school systems in the state of Texas.
Participating districts are partnering with Region 4, Texas Education Agency (TEA), and Texas Center of Student Supports (TCSS) to support the non-academic needs of students.
AIM College and Career Preparatory, Weis Middle School, and Austin Elementary are the campuses representing GISD.
Our GISD SCG goals focus on improving students’ sense of belonging by increasing the number of students who indicate that they are connected to a trusted adult on campus by 10% and by decreasing the number of students receiving disciplinary actions by 10%.
Focusing on the academic and nonacademic needs of students by providing safe and supportive learning environments will result in improved academic achievement as well as mental, behavioral, and physical health and well-being of students.
If you have any questions, or would like to serve on an SCG Advisory Committee this school year, please email the Project Manager, Molly Allmond, at mollyallmond@gisd.org.
