Turkey Processing Day at Smith Valley Schools!
Yesterday, the Smith Valley Schools campus was buzzing with activity as students, staff, and community members came together for the annual turkey processing event—one of the district’s most unique and impactful work-based learning opportunities.
This program allows students interested in agriculture to gain real, hands-on experience. Under the leadership of Student Business Manager Wyatt Berrington and with guidance from agriculture teacher Matia Dreyer, students take part in every step of preparing turkeys for local families’ Thanksgiving meals. Their hard work supports the community while teaching responsibility, business skills, teamwork, and agricultural practices.
In keeping with a beloved Smith Valley tradition, one lucky turkey received a full pardon this year. Principal Mattice ceremoniously pardoned the turkey, affectionately named “Bartholomew” by students. The Pardoned turkey will now enjoy a long and comfortable life, safe from the Thanksgiving table.
This incredible program continues to demonstrate the strength of hands-on learning and the deep connection between Smith Valley Schools and their community.
Wishing all of our Lyon County School District families a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
