Ms. Molloy's Classes are Busy!
Ms. Molloy’s English 1 classes are learning persuasive writing techniques. They have recently started an argumentative essay. Students have accessed a model paragraph, a guided outline, and topic ideas to help them choose a controversial issue for their essay. Students will also learn various techniques to improve their writing and reasoning skills.
In English 2, students are finishing up their reading of the Kite Runner, which will culminate in writing a literary analysis essay to explain a theme or character in detail using quotes from the test to support their essay’s thesis. Students will also watch important sections of the film to improve their understanding of the novel’s setting and characters.
Ms. Molloy’s Psychology class is learning about different methods of staying happy, motivation, and how to get over periods of being “stuck.” Students are collaborating with a partner to create a Happiness Project that includes important facts, links to articles, and other relevant scientific information related to pursuing and maintaining a happy life.
A Word from Ms Brown's Classes
In the third marking period, we are focusing on argument writing in English 3 and 4 students are practicing the use of the three rhetorical appeals—ethos, pathos, and logos—to make persuasive arguments. In English 3, we watched the film A Time to Kill and analyzed how the lawyers use these appeals to argue their case. We also discussed the racial tensions in Mississippi during the time the story is set. In English 4, students watched Philadelphia and applied the same analytical approach to the case presented in the film. This film also led to discussions about the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and the role of discrimination laws in protecting LGBTQ+ individuals. Students will be practicing writing through these appeals to develop their own arguments on real-world topics.
In Journalism, we are focusing on Opinion Editorials, which ties into the argument writing students are doing in English. As part of this, students watched the documentary 2073. In this film, the director presents his opinion on what the world might look like in 2073, incorporating his views alongside fact-based elements about dictatorial leadership, excessive surveillance, reliance on technology, and the growing influence of billionaires. Students analyzed the documentary's arguments, considering the likelihood of the director's predictions coming true and considering their own opinion about such a future. Students will be working on their own opinion editorials on real-world topics of their choosing.
Mr. Blum's Classes in Action
Mr. Blum's students are deeply engaged in creative and thought-provoking projects across multiple subjects, blending research, critical thinking, and artistic expression.
🔹 Financial History: Students are imagining their future business ventures by designing logos, crafting catchy slogans, and creating brand identities that stick in customers’ minds.
🔹 Sociology: After researching ten recent Executive Orders, students are selecting the one that resonates most with their values, analyzing its impact on their lives and society.
🔹 World History: Exploring Medieval and Renaissance Europe, students have identified twenty works of art and chosen one that speaks to their historical knowledge and artistic sensibilities.
For each project, students first draft their ideas on paper before bringing them to life on large-format displays. Those who prefer writing are developing expository essays to express their insights.
This is an ongoing journey—some students have fully embraced the challenge, while others are progressing at their own pace. We are excited to see their final masterpieces!
Mr. DePaola's Music Corner
Hi-Tech Music: Composing, Producing, and Music Theory
This month in Hi-Tech Music, students have been diving into the world of music theory and notation software, learning the fundamentals of reading and writing music. They’re gaining hands-on experience with digital tools that professional musicians use to compose and arrange music, helping them understand the structure behind the songs they love.
In addition to theory, students are taking on the role of creative musical directors and producers in an exciting new project. They’re designing their own conceptual music pieces, deciding everything from instrumentation to production style. This challenge encourages them to think critically about how music is crafted and what makes a composition stand out in today’s industry.
Musical Theatre: From Script to Screen
Our Musical Theatre class has been exploring Arsenic and Old Lace, reading the script and analyzing the storytelling techniques unique to stage productions. Students are discussing how elements like dialogue, character development, and pacing differ in a script versus a finished performance, deepening their appreciation for the art of live theatre.
Beyond reading, we’re also examining the adaptations required when bringing a play to the big screen. Through class discussions, students are considering the creative choices filmmakers make when transitioning from stage to film—how camera angles, editing, and setting changes can completely transform a story. This analysis is helping them develop a keen eye for both theatre and cinema.
Legacy of Popular Music: Beatlemania and Cultural Shifts
In Legacy of Popular Music, we’re stepping back in time to explore Beatlemania and The Beatles’ legendary appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Students are analyzing the massive cultural impact of this moment and how The Beatles helped shape the music industry forever. We’re also discussing the state of America in the wake of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and how The Beatles provided a much-needed sense of joy and hope for a grieving nation.
To connect history with today’s world, we’re comparing The Beatles’ rise to modern music phenomena. Students are examining how contemporary artists generate fan movements, utilize media, and create lasting cultural shifts. By drawing these parallels, they’re gaining a deeper understanding of how music influences and reflects society across generations.
A Word from Nurse Fatima
The Hope Academy Health Office is dedicated to supporting the well-being of our students by conducting health screenings for vision, hearing, and scoliosis, in addition to providing care during regular clinic hours for emergency sick visits. These screenings are part of our ongoing commitment to ensure the health and development of each child.
Beyond our typical health services, we also view lunchtime as an opportunity to focus on students’ social and emotional growth. Students frequently drop by during lunch as we create a safe and welcoming space for students to share their thoughts, express concerns, and ask questions related to their social emotional well-being and physical health. This time allows us to provide guidance, offer support, and give feedback, fostering a positive environment for students to develop resilience, learn coping strategies, and build confidence.
Our goal is not only to address immediate health concerns but also to help cultivate a holistic sense of well-being that nurtures both the body and mind.
