Welcome Welcome

Greeting LHS Community - our first two days of school have gone as well as we could have hoped. What a pleasure it was to greet students and staff Thursday morning at the renovated front entrance. It didn’t hurt that the sun was shining and those we greeted were generally smiling and happy to be there! The first day of school can be tough; students can be nervous for all the obvious reasons, especially 9th graders. We did see some of that yesterday, but I’m always amazed about how that feeling of summer-ending angst withers away so quickly for so many of our students. When students return from the long weekend, most of the adjustments have been made and their comfort level increases dramatically.

We have more students in our building than we have had in ten plus years and there is a positive energy being generated as a result. Our students were respectful and attentive at the Opening Assembly and received the message regarding the importance of treating each other well, working hard, operating with some level of self-discipline, and having respect not only for others, but for one’s self as well. We also emphasized the importance of getting involved, setting goals, and having expectations of themselves that they work hard to try and meet. All of this, I’m sure, is typical of messaging that all schools send, but we lean into it in serious fashion not to make school less fun, or have their time in the building burdened with a level of supervision and monitoring that detracts from the experience. That’s not it at all. We have found that students simply care more and respond better when they understand clearly what is expected of them.

As always, please reach out if we can help your child better enjoy their school day. Most requests we can accommodate and if we can’t, we should be able to explain the reason why. We have a wonderful staff who enjoy their job and are dedicated to meeting the needs of the students they work with. I hope you all have a chance to enjoy the long weekend with friends and family.

Take care,

Ian / Principal

The LHS Daily Schedule & Academic Block

This is a link to the daily schedule at LHS. You will see that our Friday schedule is slightly different due to advisory. We also plan for delayed openings and early release days, and these schedules will be used as needed.

We have Academic Block at the end of the day from 2:05-2:30 and we encourage students to use the time wisely. You might meet with a teacher for extra help or make up a quiz that you missed. You might go to the library, cafeteria, student center, a friendly classroom, or outside to get a start on homework. You might have a club meeting or activity. You might need to get ready for practice or a game. You might want to enjoy some social time with your friends. All of these are good uses of Academic Block.

Some students work or have other commitments and leave at 2:05. This is also fine as long as the student is in good academic standing.

The buses leave promptly at 2:30, so students need to be sure to be on time. Let us know if you have any questions.

The Class of 2025

Members of our senior class gathered for a sunrise hike last weekend.

Welcome to our New Staff Members

We are fortunate to add these fine people to the team.

STEM Internship

LHS began the 7th year of the STEM Internship with Hypertherm and Fujifilm Dimatix this week. They started at Hypertherm with Tim Renner and students from Thetford Academy and will work with associates from both companies during 1st semester. We are grateful for this community partnership and know it will be a good experience for Max, Mark, Chris, Will, Garrett, Nick, and Paul.

AP Literature

On opening day, Mrs. Caccavaro's AP Lit students worked on constructing their own version of the poem Taking Your Olympic Measure by Alberto Rios. They discussed the role-specific word choices and punctuation play in developing meaning.

Take Flight

LHS has a new aviation class this year in which students will build a plane. Thanks to the NH Aviation Museum, Tango Flight, and dozens of donors, the plane kit is waiting and the hangar is ready. Twenty community members and parents will serve as mentors for the process, and they had a two-day training last week. We are ready for take-off!

You can see the latest Take Flight newsletter here. Please email brobinson@sau88.net if you would like to receive Take Flight updates in the future.

Summer Studies at St. Paul's School

Five LHS students attended the Advanced Studies Program (ASP) at St. Paul's this summer. They studied “Forbidden Fictions” - a literature course about banned books; Ecology, and Exercise Physiology. Congratulations to Lucas, Amalia, Sophia, Nina, and Tim!

Marco Selected for Boys Nation

The American Legion's Boys Nation program was held July 19-26, in Washington, D.C., and our own Marco Getchell was selected as one of the representatives from New Hampshire.

The event is sponsored by the American Legion. Ninety-eight incoming high school seniors met at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., and spent a week immersed in the political process. During their eight days at American Legion Boys Nation, the “senators” learned from a hands-on approach how the U.S. Senate and the federal government function.

Senators learned the proper method of handling bills according to U.S. Senate rules. Participation in the political process was emphasized throughout the week, including organization of party conventions and nominating and electing a president and vice president.

The week of government training also included lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators met with elected officials from their home states.

Since Boys Nation began in 1946, a number of its graduates have been elected to public office, including presidents, congressmen, state governors and state legislators. Many others have been inspired to work for the campaigns of individuals seeking public office.

It kind of makes us wonder what Marco’s future will hold…

Congratulations for being chosen for this great honor, Marco. We know you represented us well.

Norah's Opportunity in Italy

Norah was sponsored by the local Rotary district to participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange International program in Italy this summer. As part of this exchange, she had the opportunity to live with another student named Sofi, and Sofi has spent the rest of the summer in the US.
