Celebrating the Fall Sports Successes and Welcoming Winter Sports by Justin Gran

To cap off our Pueblo West High School athletics Fall season, we want to celebrate the dedication, hard work, and achievements of our student-athletes. For starters, PWHS Football ended the season with an 11-2 record overall, winning two playoff games against Golden High School and Heritage High School. Unfortunately, they came up short against the Montrose Redhawks in a hard fought battle ending in a score of 18-7. Moving onto the cross country team, the girls varsity team made it to state, where they placed 18th overall. The boys golf team ended up finishing 2nd in the Colorado Springs Metro League (CSML). Two golfers, junior Parker Shaw and senior Jacob Valdez, also qualified for state. Shaw finished in 4th place and Valdez finished in 29th. Congratulations to those two as well as the rest of the boys golf team for an amazing season. Shifting gears into our soccer season, they went 9-6-1 and made the playoffs. They lost to Cheyenne Mountain in the first round of playoffs in a tight loss (0-1), but they still had a spectacular season. For the boys tennis team, they ended with a team record of 5-4, and made the state tennis championships, where they woefully did not place. Our varsity softball team on the other hand, went 19-7, winning the CSML league, and winning one playoff game against Arapahoe, with a score of 13-6. Rounding out the fall sports, we have girls volleyball. They went 25-4 on the season, finishing 2nd in the CSML league. They made the state playoffs and won two out of their four matches. Congratulations to all of the PWHS Fall sports athletes and coaches for a great season. Next up is the winter sports season, where athletes will be grinding out tough schedules in the CSML over the next few months in boys and girls basketball, boys and girls wrestling, and girls swimming and diving. Best of luck to all these athletes!

"We Cheer For Our Team" - Sporting Behavior

As we enter into our winter sports season, it is important for us to support our athletes in a positive manner. We set the tone as spectators for these events. CHSAA reminds us all of the following expectations when we participate in cheering on our Cyclones.

  • Remember that you are at a contest to support and yell for your team and to enjoy the skill and competition; not to intimidate or ridicule the other team and its fans.
  • Remember that school athletics are learning experiences for students and they may make mistakes. Praise student-athletes in their attempt to improve themselves as students, as athletes and as people as you would praise a student working in the classroom.
  • A ticket is a privilege to observe the contest, not a license to verbally assault others and be generally obnoxious.
  • Learn the rules of the game, so that you may understand and appreciate why certain situations take place.
  • Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators and support groups. Treat them as you would treat a guest in your own home.
  • Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Understand that they are doing their best to help promote the student/athlete, and admire their willingness to participate in full view of the public.
  • Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team.
  • Refrain from the use of any controlled substances (alcohol, drugs, etc.) before, and during games, and afterwards on or near the site of the event (i.e., tailgating.)
  • Use only those cheers that support and uplift the teams involved.
  • Recognize and compliment the efforts of school and league administrators for their efforts in emphasizing the benefits of educational athletics and the rule of good SPORTING BEHAVIOR to that end.
  • Be a positive role model through your own actions and by censuring those around you at events whose behavior is unbecoming.

We want to thank all the PWHS students who donated food and turkeys this year.

On December 9th, several Pueblo West JROTC cadets visited the Pueblo VA Home in Belmont to honor veterans and spread Christmas cheer. The cadets engaged in meaningful conversations with the veterans and personally handed out hand-written Christmas cards to ensure every veteran was included. Congratulations to the Mural Idea Submission Winners Nikolas Matthews and Alina Lopez. Both submitted ideas for the mural competition to earn the opportunity display student artwork that captures the essence of PWHS. After consideration, both were chosen to be used. Alina's piece will be completed next semester for the area in the cafeteria, and Nik's will be completed on a wall outside of the weight room. Congratulations to both! We cannot wait to see the finished murals.

Course Spotlight

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is a two-year course that develops analytic methods with an emphasis on calculus. It is a great course for students looking to become mathematicians, engineers, scientists, economists and those with an interest in analytic methods. During the second year, students will produce a personal math-based research project as part of the course’s IB assessment which is a great experience to prepare students for future mathematics classes. Students can earn college credit by taking the IB exam their senior year. Contact Mrs. McHenry in room B128 for more information about IB Math A&A.
