Helping families stay connected to Bend-La Pine Schools
From our District leaders
Celebrating the end of our school year and reflecting on the accomplishments and achievements of 2025-26.
Bend-La Pine Schools is introducing a new way to stay connected
We’re excited to share that we’ve adopted a new communication platform called ParentSquare to keep you better informed and more connected with your school community.
With ParentSquare, you’ll receive all district, school and classroom messages in one place, whether by email, text, mobile app, or web. You’ll also be able to:
- Stay up to date on news and events
- Send and receive messages with teachers and staff
- Fill out forms and permission slips
- Sign up for events and volunteer opportunities
- View calendar items and photos from your school
At the District level we will begin using ParentSquare this summer as we prepare for the new school year to begin in September. Schools and teachers will switch over to ParentSquare as well.
This platform will be the new way you receive alerts about school emergencies and closures or delays due to severe weather. ParentSquare will replace our current alert system, BLConnect, which requires users to sign up. Starting this August, you will receive our urgent and emergency alerts automatically through ParentSquare.
To get started, look for your ParentSquare invite, which we’ll send you soon. Follow the directions to verify that the information we have for you is correct. Then you can customize your notification preferences. If you’re tired of important school messages getting lost in your email inbox, ParentSquare gives you the flexibility to choose when and how you want to receive news and updates.
After your account is ready, we recommend you download the ParentSquare mobile app for the best experience. This is the preferred choice for parents who want to easily track school messages and alerts on their phone. The ParentSquare app is free for both iOS and Android devices.
We have more detail about ParentSquare here on our website.
New assessments and restrictions on student technology coming next school year
This next school year will bring big changes for students, teachers and families in how we measure academic growth as well as how we engage with technology tools in classrooms.
The changes include new assessments in reading and mathematics for students in elementary and middle school. These are required by Senate Bill 141, Oregon's 2025 Education Accountability Act.
We also are making some changes in student use of technology, as directed by our School Board. These include reduced access to iPads for elementary students; keeping iPads at school for middle school students; and restricted YouTube access for high school students.
We invite you to learn more about each of these changes in the following letter from Deputy Superintendent Lisa Birk: LETTER ON CHANGES FOR 2026-27
From Superintendent Steven Cook
Enrollment trends raise the question: What kind of community do we want to become?
For many in our community, this spring’s budget conversations in Bend-La Pine Schools have felt personal, because they are.
Behind every school or district program reduction due to lower enrollment are real people and real impacts about what our schools will look like for students in the years ahead. And while Bend-La Pine Schools is not alone in making these difficult decisions, that fact offers little comfort. Across Oregon, school districts are reducing staff and scaling back services as costs continue to outpace state revenue.
This moment requires honesty about both our immediate reality and the long-term future facing public education – especially when the call for transparency and accountability is at an all-time high.
Recently, our district commissioned a long-range enrollment forecast from FLO Analytics to better understand the next decade ahead. That document can be found on our website at bls.fyi/future. The findings confirm what many districts across the state are experiencing: enrollment growth has reversed, the proportion of school-aged children in our communities is declining, and the financial pressures facing schools are unlikely to ease on their own.
Meet your Excellence in Education Honorees and Finalists
On Wednesday, May 13 on the stage of the Mountain View High School auditorium, we recognized 76 staff members from across the district who have distinguished themselves this school year with their leadership, innovation, and outstanding professional practice. From inspiring classrooms to behind-the-scenes brilliance, each of them has made a mark worth celebrating.
The honorees, nominated by their supervisors, were recognized at the annual event. They include custodians, counselors, kitchen managers, classroom teachers, educational assistants, office managers, bus drivers and others who have had a positive impact on students.
“Tonight is a celebration of the extraordinary people who make Bend-La Pine Schools so special,” Superintendent Steven Cook said following Tuesday’s ceremony. “Our honorees are not only exceptional at what they do, they bring genuine care, passion, and purpose to their work leaving a lasting impact on students, families, and colleagues. It’s a privilege to recognize and thank each of them for the heart they bring to our schools every day.”
At the end of the program, the district named 14 finalists for the Certified Employee of the Year and the Support Staff Employee of the Year. Those two honors will be announced at the start of the 2026-27 school year, along with Administrator of the Year.

When the school ends, free summer meals for kids and teens begin!
School is almost out for summer, and Bend-La Pine Schools will continue providing kids with nutritious meals. And did we mention meals are FREE?! We offer healthy meals at no charge to children and teens at six outdoor locations. The program is open to anyone 18 and younger.
Locations include Boys & Girls Club Downtown, R.E. Jewell Elementary School, and La Pine Elementary School. For exact dates, times, and more, go to bls.fyi/SummerMeals. Please note that La Pine Elementary is a pick-up location only. At all other locations, meals must be eaten on site.
There is no registration or fee. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend with their children and may purchase a meal for themselves, $4 for breakfast and $6 for lunch.
Celebrating two exceptional staff members who go above and beyond
As the school year comes to a close, we are proud to recognize two outstanding individuals whose dedication and service have made a lasting impact on students and school communities. They will both be recognized at the School Board meeting on June 16.
Pacific Crest Middle School is home to a true standout in physical education, teacher and coach Ashley Wallace, June’s Champion for Students.
Ashley was nominated by 7th-grade science and Design & Modeling teacher Jane Shein, who shared:“Ashley is an expert teacher who makes all students feel welcome in her classes, which is an amazing feat in P.E. She has high standards and inspires students to do their best, work together, and teaches sportsmanship and fair play above all. Ashley spends hours choosing teams for each P.E. unit to help all students grow and find success as part of a team.”
Also being recognized at the June Board meeting is School Resource Officer John Horvath. While Officer Horvath serves our east-side schools during the day, his commitment to students extends far beyond his regular duties.
After noticing broken and abandoned bicycles at Bend Tech Academy (BTA), Officer Horvath took action on his own time. He collected, repaired, and rebuilt the bikes, then donated them to students at BTA and Bend Senior High who needed them most. Officer Horvath, thank you for the compassion, generosity, and heart you bring to Bend-La Pine Schools. We are honored to have you serving our students and families and proud to recognize you with the Above & Beyond the Call of Duty Award.
Congratulations to Ashley Wallace and Officer John Horvath, and thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students every day.
Enjoy a safe and fun summer
As we head into summer break and say, “See you in September,” we’d like to share a few important reminders about e-bike safety. Understanding the rules of the road helps keep riders, pedestrians, and everyone in our community safe.
A few key things to know:
- Oregon law requires e-bike riders to be at least 16 years old.
- E-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks.
- Riders must follow all traffic laws, including riding on the correct side of the road and stopping at stop signs and red lights.
- Some vehicles marketed as e-bikes are actually electric motorcycles capable of speeds over 40 mph. These vehicles are not legal on many roads and trails within city limits.
Most importantly, this is about safety. Whether you're riding an e-bike, walking, driving, or enjoying our trails and neighborhoods, we all play a role in looking out for one another. Ride responsibly, stay alert, be predictable, and follow the rules of the road.
Have a wonderful summer, and we look forward to seeing everyone back together in September!
