MSD Weekly Update
Keeping you informed

๐ Literacy Month ๐
A note from Superintendent Deborah Rumbaugh
March is Literacy Month in our schools! This is a time to celebrate the importance of reading, writing, and learning together. As always, classrooms and libraries are filled with special activities, book celebrations, and opportunities for students to grow as readers and thinkers. March is a great time to visit public libraries, share favorite books with one another, and even experiment with writing a book yourself!
Weโre excited to shine a spotlight on literacy and grateful for the teachers, interventionists, and staff who nurture studentsโ love of reading every day. Additionally, we intentionally support readers who are not yet at grade level. This is most often done by classroom teachers and interventionists, who help fill reading and writing gaps in children's learning. These supports are intentional and are often funded through local levies. Voter-approved levies enable school districts to ensure some level of literacy support in our schools; without local support, these supports for students and staff would be even more limited than they are today.
Families play such an important role too, whether itโs sharing a bedtime story or simply talking about books together.
Thank you for partnering with us to support strong literacy for every child.
Deborah Rumbaugh, Ed.D.
Superintendent
What You Should Know ๐
Thanks to our World Language Teachers ๐
Shout out to the amazing World Language teachers across MSD for the energy and care they bring to helping students learn new languages and explore new cultures! In classrooms across our schools, you can hear language learning happening, students trying out new words, laughing when they get something wrong, helping each other figure out how to say something just right. Those small moments matter.
Learning another language opens doors for students. It helps them connect with people from different backgrounds, builds confidence, and gives them skills theyโll carry long after graduation. We deeply appreciate the way MSD language staff make classrooms welcoming spaces where students can take risks, practice, and grow every day.
Does your child receive multilingual services?
If your child receives multilingual services and you are interested in summer school with MSD this year, please fill out the following survey: https://forms.gle/wuykdwQSKTYyR3iA7
Your response to this survey will help us plan for our Summer Learning Academy and better understand the interest from families whose students receive Multilingual Services.
If you have questions about this survey, please reach out to Annette Northrop at annette_northrop@msvl.k12.wa.us.
Looking for plans on March 14th? Not anymore! ๐ช
Come out to Heritage High School on Saturday, March 14th for this year's Conservation Club KidWind challenge!
Wind Challenge and Solar Challenge teams from 7 schools across Marysville School District will compete in an instant challenge, judges interview, turbine testing, and a knowledge bowl. Teams create displays that explain their engineering and design process, and test their turbines in our 4 foot wind tunnel built by students from WSU Everett's Engineering Department! Come cheer on these hardworking students as they compete for the chance to represent our region at the World's KidWind Challenge later this year.
The turbines begin turning at 9:30am, so get some breakfast and stop on by -- and don't miss the awards ceremony at 2:30pm! ๐

Round Dance at Totem This Week!
Thank you to our Native Education Department and the Tulalip Education Division for hosting this week's Round Dance at Totem Middle. ๐ It was a wonderful event, giving our community another opportunity to connect with each other, sing and dance, and have some fun!
๐ฏReading Night at Grove Elementary ๐
Every great reader starts with one amazing story (or 14) ๐
From Quil Ceda Tulalip to Grove Elementary, this week was jam-packed with storytime and literacy events for students, and an impressive roster of volunteers who helped make it all happen.
Over at Grove, a superduo of Kristins (the Librarian, Mrs. Savidge, and Learning Assistance Program teacher, Mrs. Ebright) planned an evening for families to enjoy a series of storytime sessions, snacks in the cafeteria, bookmark decorating in the library, and tables of free books to give away!
Throughout the night, 14 story times were led by teachers and community guests, and families had their choice of stories to take home from two or three xerox boxes worth of donated, gently used books.
Students and their families gathered in classrooms to experience books like A Day in the Life of a Firefighter (read by the wonderful guest readers from Marysville Fire District, of course), Donโt Trust Fish, The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors, and All Are Welcome.
Students also had the chance to sign up for their very own library card at the Marysville Library table and snag some Silvertips swag from one of the guest readers!
This weekโs event is part of the ongoing work happening at Grove to create a culture of excitement around reading. Students who read outside of school hours and turn in their reading logs to the library have their names posted in the hall and announced in the mornings by the principal, and they receive a monthly prize. The school also hosts an open reading time in the library each morning and tracks the reading minutes for kids who attend, allowing even more students to be recognized and start their day off in a great way!
Whether itโs the wonderful volunteers who come in to read with students, families who share the joy of reading with their kids, or staff who spend their personal time to run events like these, we are so grateful for the dedication of our community to get more students and families excited about reading. A special thank you to the Marysville Fire District, Everett Silvertips, Marysville Library, and all of our guest readers this week for sharing your time with students in MSD!
