What's Happening In Special Classes This Month....
CAT TIME
Teacher: Emily Tilley
etilley@bpsbearcats.com
CAT Time in October means all things HALLOWEEN! This month we will be investigating pumpkins and the rotting process. We will also study skeletons and work to create structures using "bones". Who doesn't love Halloween candy? We can all make candy disappear in our tummies, but we will experiment to see what solution can make candy disappear by dissolving the quickest. It wouldn't be October without learning about spiders and spiderwebs. We will become engineers to construct web-like bridges that will hold toy spiders. Happy Halloween, from Mrs. Tilley!
LIBRARY
Teacher: Dana Gamble
We will be focusing on Fiction and NonFiction genre stories, characters and story elements. The Primary Book Fair will be October 20th - 24th. The Book Fair will be open to the students in the mornings to shop and to the parents during Parent-Teacher Conferences. More information will be sent home soon with your child.
PE
Teacher: Shane Duncan
We have had a great first month of the year. We started the year with some of my favorite games. In the month of October we are going to play some fall and halloween related games. Hopefully the kids will learn some skills while playing and have fun while doing it. Also in the middle of the month I will have an intern start helping in my classes until Christmas. I can't wait for her to come over and see how great our kids and our building is.
ART
Teacher: Megan Jones
In art class for the month of October we will be looking at new materials to use in our artworks. We will be experimenting with watercolors, tempura paint sticks, and oil pastels. Students will make an artwork that incorporates these mediums together!
MUSIC
Teacher: Kari Metheny
We will be learning about rhyming, nursery rhyme songs, and movement games
We will be focusing on steady beat and tempo with seasonal games and songs on our classroom instruments. We will also start learning songs for our Christmas Program in December!
Counselor's Corner
Brookland Primary is excited to celebrate Red Ribbon Week! This year, we’re focusing on making good choices and supporting our community. We will be collecting food for our school's food pantry and our food backpack program throughout the week. We’re also thrilled to welcome Scott Davis from the Electric Coops of Arkansas as our special guest speaker. He will present a fun and engaging safety magic show for our students, teaching them important safety lessons in an entertaining way. Let’s make it a great week filled with learning and giving back!

Pre-School News....
This month in PreK, our classrooms are buzzing with excitement! Using the Frog Street Curriculum, children are exploring themes like My Friends, Community Helpers, and Kind and Helpful Me while practicing story sequencing, identifying characters and settings, counting, and learning numbers 0-9. They’re also discovering letters like C, D, N, J, K, W, H, X, and Y. With our Launchpad Curriculum, kids are building foundational reading skills—blending and segmenting syllables, matching beginning sounds, and recognizing uppercase and lowercase letters A-H. October kicks off with fun Homecoming dress-up days, a Community Helpers parade, and the big Homecoming parade! At home, supporting your child’s social-emotional growth is key—when they experience BIG FEELINGS, help them talk about what they’re feeling and what they need. Remember, teachers are here to partner with you, so reach out anytime for ideas on managing those tricky emotions! We are looking forward to meeting with all of you during Parent Teacher Conferences on October 16th! Sign up links for scheduling a conference time with your child's teacher will be shared soon.
Kindergarten News....
Letters and Sounds
Kindergarteners are learning to identify letters, sounds and write letters correctly on the line. Practice writing with your child, talking about the name of each letter and the sound it makes as your child writes. Discuss how to hold a pencil and use spaces between letters so they are legible. Students are also learning numbers, shapes, colors and sight words. Please be sure to practice these skills at home.
Units for October
Kindergarten will integrate several fun units throughout the curriculum in October. We will learn about Community Helpers, Fire Safety, investigate pumpkins, bats and spiders and do some fun Halloween activities.
Basic Skills
Students are practicing and learning basic procedures and skills. Please check your child’s folder for daily notes, newsletters, important information and return the folder to school. With colder weather approaching, this is a great time to practice tying shoes, fastening buttons, and working with zippers. Mastering these skills will help your child become more independent and confident.
Expected Behaviors
Please discuss keeping feet and hands to oneself and following directions. Stress rules and the importance of being neat in the restroom, not interrupting others, and being respectful to everyone at our school. Please don’t forget to send snack and a water bottle!
Principal's Corner...
Happy Fall! We are so excited to announce that all students will receive the book "How the Crayons Saved the School". Our goal this year is to send a book home with all students every month. In order to have the funds to do this, we will be having our annual Little Caesars Pizza Kit fundraiser the first week of October. Money raised through this event helps to purchase the books we send home. Please mark your calendars for Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 16th (school will dismiss early this day) and no school on October 17th.
We want to remind you that attendance at school is key for your student's success. It is so important to be at school and be on time for school. We know that all students can be successful and being present is a first step towards that success.
