May is Mental Health Awareness Month! This is a time to promote the importance of mental health and well-being in our schools and communities. As professionals in school psychology, we acknowledge the importance of mental health to the general well-being and happiness of our students. We have a unique chance to emphasize the crucial function that mental health plays in enabling students to achieve academic and social-emotional success.

Additionally, we continue to see the impact the pandemic has had on our students. They may be experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns due to the many challenges they have faced in the past three years, such as social isolation, changes in routines, and disruptions to learning.

It is essential that we, as school psychologists, educators, and parents, recognize the signs of mental health concerns and provide support and resources to those who need them. This includes promoting self-care, building resiliency, and encouraging help-seeking behaviors.

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is also critical. Mental illness is not a weakness. We must create a culture that values and supports mental health for all individuals.

Spring, May especially, is a busy and stressful time in education and in your roles as LSSPs (soon to be School Psychologists!). Throughout the month, I encourage everyone to take time to prioritize your own mental health and well-being. Engage in self-care practices, such as mindfulness exercises, physical activity, spending time with loved ones, or catching up on your favorite show. It is also essential to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength and that there are resources available for those who need support.

Let's work together to raise awareness about mental health and create a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. By prioritizing mental health and well-being, we can help students reach their full potential and thrive in all aspects of their lives.
