Fifth Grade: During January, fifth grade artists learned about the art of printmaking and famous Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Student artists drew a food item, transferred their drawing to a printing block, carved the block and then printed their image multiple times. When the prints were dry, artists collaged them together to make a multicolor printed piece of art!

Fourth Grade: In January, fourth grade artists have been learning about Wisconsin born painter, Georgia O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe is best known for her paintings of enlarged blossoms and New Mexico inspired landscapes and skulls. Artists designed their own artwork inspired by O’Keeffe style. They traced their line drawings with glue and colored them with chalk pastel, using an analogous color scheme.

Third Grade: Artists in Mrs. Lenerz, Mrs. Nachriner, and Mrs. Smith's classes are working on a drawing project based on art by Keith Hering's break dances. Each artist will draw and paint three dancing figures on complementary colors. The paintings will be assembled to create a fun series of dancing figures.

Artists in Mrs. Cichanowicz, Mrs. Swanson and Ms. Udulutch's classes are working on loom weaving. Due to the number of looms that are available we cannot have all the students weaving at the sametime, so we weave with a few classes at a time. The children have warped their looms and have begun the basic weaving known as tabby and some have tried raya knots. This is a longer unit; however, the children really enjoy having the opportunity to create their own weaving. Several different weaving techniques are demonstrated and the children are asked to include at least three different styles in their weaving. They are given the opportunity to choose their own colors as long as they use at least two, but no more than five. This allows them to create patterns with color that show unity, or look like they belong together.

As always, if you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Physical Education Physical Education

We are finishing up our Gymnastics unit at Grand. We are so fortunate to have all the equipment we do from the High School team. The kids having the chance to work on a spring floor, vaults, balance beams, and bars is not something many kids get the opportunity to do in Elementary School.

February is Healthy Heart Month. We are celebrating our 23rd year of the Kids Heart Challenge, formally known as Jump Rope for Heart. This year we will run our Jump Rope for Heart event the week of March 2-March 6 in PE classes. Your child (ren) has an opportunity to raise money for the American Heart Association. Last year our school raised over $5000. This year if you would like your child to participate they can sign up using the link below. There will be a letter coming home to you soon with more information regarding this event. We encourage all students to sign up for the event but in no way require or ask that you raise money. That is a family choice. All money should be collected by March 6th.
