Panther Update
Hello Panther Families,
I recently came across two messages that I thought were perfect for this time of year.
First, I received a message from a community member who happened to be related to the pilot of the plane that flew our BLHS Choir home from New York City over Spring Break. “Not only did the flight attendants overly compliment the students' calm, respect, and courteousness, but on the way home the next day they inquired about the kids and mentioned numerous times how they wished they had another group like them on the way home. Kudos to them and kudos to you all for raising the bar and setting such a wonderful example for all our kids.” This was a pleasant reminder how great our Choir students are, and a reminder that they are not the only students who are doing amazing things for our school and our community. In fact, the vast majority of our students are doing exactly that. It was a reminder that we need to share the good stuff that our Panthers do with our community, otherwise they just don’t know and they fill the narrative with other information, true or not. Sharing the good work our students do is essential to Building the Hill and it is not the job of just one person, but the job of each of us. Our kiddos deserve it. :-)
Second, I came across a message that started with the phrase “nunc incipere.” It means “now I begin” in latin. The idea is that no matter how many times we fail, we can always begin again. The Spring season is full of new life, sunlight, and growth. Because of this, it seemed like the perfect time to hear that message. No matter what goals we missed, tests we failed, relationships we damaged, we can always begin again. It is closely related to another concept that is regularly quoted from a Japanese proverb “Nana korobi ya oki” (I hope I got that correct) which translated means “fall down seven times, get up eight.” We are starting the last quarter of our school year. Many students are making the final push to graduate, to pass their classes, to ace their exams, or to accomplish a personal goal. Remember, progress is not linear. Any goal worth achieving is going to come with some adversity. We often fall, but we can alway get up and begin again. Perseverance is the perfect POWER value for this season. Remember, you are surrounded by people who care and who want you to succeed. Never hesitate to reach out.
A Message from your Counselors
Senior students, parents or guardians: It is not too late to complete the financial aid application. There is more aid available than ever before to help fund education after high school. Financial aid can be used at any post-high school program (i.e. technical college, community college or 4-year university). To apply for financial aid, start here. If you are not eligible to complete the FAFSA, you may complete the WASFA.

Parent Preview Night
Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDs prevention education in grades 5 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents/families are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons.
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District (SBLSD) is hosting a curriculum night for families to preview the HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for students enrolled in the following:
6th and 7th grade students (HIV/AIDS),
2nd semester 8th grade Skills for Life (HIV/AIDS) and
9th grade Health classes (Health content), and
Applicable 10th through 12th grade classes (HIV/AIDS).
The curriculum will be available for preview. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to understand the health content for grades 6-12, preview teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.
Family Preview for Health Curriculum Spring 2024
April 30, 2024 4:30pm to 6:00pm

Panther Spotlight
Panther Adventures in Costa Rica
We were a small but mighty group of Bonney Lake Panthers in Costa Rica - we learned a lot! We visited three different sustainable farms. Two were large-scale and produced coffee and pineapple (found frozen at Costco). The small farm we visited in Monteverde fully supplies their homes and their farm-to-table restaurant, where we made Costa Rican tortillas, empanadas, and candy directly from fresh-pressed sugar cane. We learned about cloud forest ecosystems and saw so much local wildlife at the national parks and nature reserves we visited.
BLHS Choir Success in NYC!
76 Bonney Lake High School Travelers went to New York City to perform in the Heritage Festival. We were there for 5 days!! I told them that the moments we remember are not the trophies, but the relationships and experiences of the performance. While we were singing our 9/11 tribute song, titled "Fear Not," sirens went off in the most appropriate part and in the same key. We all experienced a surreal moment of live music making and raw emotion from memories of 9/11. We also sang the piece at the peace pools at ground zero. Follow us on blhs.choir on Instagram for videos and more!
Panther adventures in Belize
Our Panther adventurers have returned from Belize with some great experiences. They planted trees to prevent soil erosion, monitored turtle, bat and aquatic bugs to determine water and rain forest quality/health, dissected the invasive Lionfish to determine its fish diet on the reef, and picked up nurdles on the beach for plastic clean up. They also got to zipline through the Belizean jungle, snorkel on the longest living reef, make tortillas and chocolate from scratch and explore the fruits and plants on an organic sustainable farm. Jerry Turner and I had an amazing adventure with this group of students!

New Academic Support for Students - Mr. Maggs
We're excited to announce that Mondays, we will be offering dedicated academic support for all students every Monday morning until the end of the school year. These sessions will run from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM.
We understand that sometimes students may face challenges in certain subjects or may need additional assistance to reach their academic goals. Our Monday morning support sessions aim to provide exactly that—a supportive environment where students can receive the extra help they need.
Here are some benefits of attending these support sessions:
Our dedicated paraeducators will be available to provide one-on-one or small group assistance, ensuring that each student's individual needs are addressed. We will also be looking to add peer- tutoring as well. Extra support can often lead to improved academic performance. By attending these sessions regularly, students may see a positive change in their grades over time.
We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their academic skills and reach their full potential. Whether your student needs help with math, science, English, or any other subject, our support sessions are here to assist them on their academic journey.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to support both you and your student every step of the way.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your student's education
Mr. Maggs - 11-12th Grade Assistant Principal

Dark Outside and Icy Roads
Please take extra care when dropping students off in the morning.
It is getting dark in the mornings and students and staff members can often be hard to see.
Also, with the changing weather comes icy conditions. Despite having deicing protocol, roads and parking lots can become slippery.
Here is a Link to our district webpage that describes the Inclement Weather Procedures.
Please share this information with your new drivers.
If you have a parking permit please review the Student Handbook pages 9-10 to ensure that we avoid as many issues as possible.
Third, please review this flow map for drop off and pick up.

Cell Phone Policy
Students are free to use their cell phones before/after school, during passing times, and during lunches.
Students are not allowed to use their cell phones and headphones or have them out during class time.
The goal of our cell phone policy is to maximize the safety and the learning of our students in our classrooms while reducing inappropriate and unsafe behavior on electronic devices including; buying and harassment.
The goal is not to be a barrier for parent to student communication.
- Parents can message their students and they can respond during passing period, during lunch, or before or after school.
- In the case of an urgent message, please call the BLHS Main Office at 253-891-5700 and we will coordinate connecting you with your student.
We know this will be unpopular with many students but we care too much to ignore this important need.
