KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
We have a few important updates to share as we head into the final stretch of the school year.
First, April is the Month of the Military Child, and we want to take a moment to recognize the many military-connected students and families in our school. These children experience unique challenges—frequent moves, long separations from loved ones, and the need to adjust quickly to new environments. Despite all of this, they continue to show incredible strength, resilience, and kindness. We’re proud to have them as part of our Kodiak Middle School family and we thank them, and their families, for all they do.
Also, congratulations to all of our students who participated in this month’s state testing and earned entries in our first KMS testing raffle. We saw so many students showing up on time, arriving with charged iPads, and giving their best effort—and we’re proud of every one of them. A huge thank you to the community members who donated prizes and helped make the raffle exciting and meaningful. We appreciate your continued support in helping our students succeed.
On Wednesday, April 23 at 2:00 PM, the Kodiak Island Borough and City will be conducting a scheduled test of the emergency alert systems. This test will include the tsunami alarm, chemical release alarm, and general alarm. These are only tests and not a sign of any real emergency. If a real emergency happens during the test, all alarms will stop and a voice message will clearly state, “This is not a test.” No action is needed from the public during the drill, but it’s a great reminder of how important it is for us to stay prepared.
Finally, a quick reminder that starting May 7, TSA will begin enforcing REAL ID requirements. This means anyone 18 or older will need to show a REAL ID or another accepted form of government-issued identification when passing through airport security. Passengers without the proper ID may face extra screening, long delays, or even be turned away from their flight. If you have travel plans coming up, we encourage you to make sure you have the right ID ahead of time. You can find more information at tsa.gov/real-id.
As always, thank you for being such an important part of our school community.
