Sawnee Elementary
July 2026
A Note From Mrs. Callahan
Hello Sawnee Families,
I hope you are enjoying simple moments that matter most like family dinners, vacations, lazy mornings, backyard adventures, ice cream on warm evenings, and maybe even a few fireworks lighting up the night sky soon. As you enjoy these summer weeks together, I hope you're finding time to slow down and simply enjoy being with the people you love.
While you're soaking up summer, we're busy preparing for a wonderful year ahead at Sawnee. I am so excited to meet our students, get to know our families, and begin building the relationships that make this community so special. I have already experienced so much kindness and warmth, and I cannot wait to meet more of our students and families in the months ahead.
For now, keep chasing fireflies, enjoying extra scoops of ice cream, watching fireworks sparkle overhead, and making the most of these sweet summer days. Before we know it, the halls of Sawnee will be filled with smiling faces, laughter, and the excitement of a brand-new school year.
Enjoy every minute of summer. We can't wait to welcome you back soon!
With a grateful heart,
Marla ♥️

Harvest of the Month
The Harvest of the Month for June is.... Tomatoes!!
Believe it or not, tomatoes aren’t always red. They can be yellow, pink, purple, black, and even white!
Found at Walt Disney World Resort, Florida, USA, the largest single tomato plant in the world covers an area of 56.73 metres sq. That’s bigger than an Olympic size swimming pool!
La Tomatina is an annual festival in Spain, where people throw 150,000 tomatoes at each other. Sounds messy!
In Ohio, USA, they love tomatoes so much that tomato juice is the official state drink!
There are around 10,000 varieties of tomatoes worldwide!

How to Prevent Your Kids from Losing What They Learned in School During Summer Vacation
“Summer break is typically a time for kids to kick back, indulge in a little extra screen time, play outside, and embrace the kind of freedom that only comes with being young and having zero responsibilities. However, all of this free time can lead to the summer slide, a regression in academic proficiency due to summer break, and experts warn it is hindering kids’ progress when they head back to school.” Check out this article from Scholastic to learn about the “summer slide” and how to avoid it!
