Tidbits from the President

It’s August…the end of Summer. We have completed another year of NTQF and will soon receive the monetary results. Several ribbons were awarded to guild members…most notably ‘honorable mention’ for the 2024 FWQG Raffle Quilt! That’s a win for all of us, since so many members were involved in the creation. We close out the guild’s fiscal year and get ready for the new one. We will vote on next year’s budget, a change to the by-laws and next year’s board members. We have also been working on Zoom to improve access for members who can’t make it to a eeting. Please try it out AND let us know what we still need to improve.

In the next year, we will be working to increase our membership. We really need everyone’s help with this. Ideas are great but we will need members to carry out those ideas. Let’s make this great guild even better. Make sure to tell your Members-at-Large what you like as well as what you want improved.

By-laws & Budget

We need to vote on a by-law change to increase membership dues.

( the increased amounts are in parentheses}

ARTICLE IV

Sec. 2. The annual dues for each member shall be $30.00 ($40.00). Rejoining after a lapsed membership is $30.00 ($40.00}.

Sec. 3. Exceptions

A. New Members joining after the sixth month of the fiscal year (March) shall pay $15.00 {$20.00} for annual dues that year. Annual dues will then be payable in accordance with Article IV Sec 1 and 2.

B. Annual dues for senior citizens age 65 and over shall be $25.00 ($35.00) annually.

Budget

We need to vote on the proposed budget for 2024-2025. As you will notice, we propose a deficit for next year. Many of the costs have risen, especially programs. The quilt show is likely to make less when all the numbers are tallied. We also want to increase membership through several ideas (which may cost money). In general numbers, we have $10,000 in a CD that matures in February and $15,000 in the checking account. The deficit is estimated at $690. Please look over the budget. ALL expenses and income MUST be listed in the budget, these include ‘pass thru’ such as Workshop and Bev Ramsey Fund.

NTQF 2024 NTQF 2024

Another year completed. There were some great quilts, including ones from our guild.

Our 2024 raffle quilt earned an honorable mention, so congratulations everyone !!!

We made more on T-shirts and Minis this year. We made less on tickets and booth. We should have final numbers in September or October.

Thank you again to EVERYONE who helped. Special thanks to Ann Houpt and Laurel Grannan for handling the booth. We will need someone new next year. We will also need a new representative for our guild on the NTQF board.

Quilt Show Booth News Quilt Show Booth News

Ladies - we have several things leftover from the booth this year.

I will bring them to the meeting.

If you missed going to the Quilt Show - which was great by the way, you will have the opportunity to buy from our items, or to claim back anything you made.

Bring your cash :)

Thanks, Ann

Raffle Quilt

The raffle quilt ‘season’ is drawing to an end. The drawing is at the November meeting, so less than 3 months left. Keep selling those tickets. Remember to mention that our quilt won Honorable Mention Ribbon at the NTQF 2024. Get more from Shelley at the membership desk or return (if necessary).

We need members to volunteer to take the quilt somewhere and sell tickets. This can be another guild, a shop, a retreat. Anywhere you are willing to go. No one wants to do all of this alone but one meeting: one day, maybe with a friend???? Is there another guild you are a member of? Is there a guild you have wanted to visit? This is the way. Ask one of the board members if you don’t know how to contact someone to visit.

Thank you so much to Shelley Clauss who has agreed to handle the logistics for the quilt. So, contact Shelley if you would like to take the quilt somewhere and sell tickets.

The ice cream social was enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone that brought toppings, we had so many choices. Also thank you to everyone that helped with setup and the clean up afterwards. I appreciate the help.

The North Texas Quilt Festival is in the history books and congratulations to the members that won a ribbon.

Find a snack recipe, make it, and bring it to the meeting

BEES BEES

EMBROIDERY BEE

We have set our meeting time to 2 pm on the last Thursday of the month.

We continue to rotate our meeting site. New members are welcome.

This month, we will share items featuring pumpkins.

Contact Wanda Edmunds or Sarah Tutt for more information.

FRAYED KNOTS

We meet on the second Tuesday evening of the month at Jonquele's.

TIGHT KNOTS --

Start a BEE Start a BEE

One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!

General Guidelines

  • Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
  • A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
  • Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
  • Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
  • Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.

Retreat 2025 Retreat 2025

Shelley has already begun to take reservations for the 2025 retreat, which will be April 3-6, 2025.

Bev Ramsey Fund Bev Ramsey Fund

Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.

Quilts of Valor Quilts of Valor

Four veterans will be honored with Quilts of Valor on September 6th at First Baptist Church of Cleburne. The ceremony will start at 7pm. Everyone is welcome.

We will have more block kits and quilt kits ready to pick up at the August meeting. If you have some ready to turn in, please bring them to the meeting.

If you would like to nominate a family member or friend who has been touched by war, please

go to the QOVF.org website and fill out the form.

Recommended size for QOV’s

60”x80” (minimum:55”x65”; maximum: 72”x90”)

Thanks again for all your hard work!

I'm sharing a commendation and a letter of thanks that we received recently.

Lovies Lovies

Lovies are used for preemie babies and their mother's so they can become familiar with each other's scent.

If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.

Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Cook Children's. Cook's is always very grateful for the gifts.

JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items) JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)

July Donations

No quilts were turned in for delivery in July for JPS. If you have colorful fabric, take an hour or so and make baby quilt for the NICU. They accept quilts of all sizes, but NICU quilts are 36x36. They really appreciate the donations we send.

Judi Janes and Carolyn Hughes

NICU Co-Chairpersons

NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts

One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.

JPS has requested other items for their patients:

Baby Items:

Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes

Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”

Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long

9 inches – circumference for small

11 inches – circumference for large

CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com

Adult Items:

These items are mainly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy at the JPS cancer center and geriatric patients.

Adult quilts or blankets (quilted or fleece)

Ostomy bag covers

Small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients to place under their arms after surgery

Minutes Minutes

Becky Alrubaiie June 18, 2024

Fort Worth Quilt Guild Meeting

July 16, 2024

Lynda McGee called the meeting to order at 6:35pm.

The minutes from the June meeting were accepted by Ann Houpt and seconded by Jonquele Jones. Then approved by all members in attendance. The treasurer’s report that went out in the newsletter will be filed for audit.

Then the guild took a short break to create our ice cream bowls of deliciousness.

While eating ice cream, we discussed the budget for 2024-2025. Because the board is anticipating an increase in storage fees, adding one more month (August) for the church, increasing the fee for the post office box and increasing cost for website usage, their recommendation is to raise membership fees by $10. Mostly, because they are anticipating the budget they set will run negative, approximately $663. Questions were raised asking for the balance on the Bev Ramsey Fund and whether we should be funding a full scholarship to the retreat if the funds are not available, the necessity of the storage space, and how the retreat fits in the income and expenses. The balance in the Bev Ramsey Fund is undetermined at this time, the storage space is a necessity and why the income and expense of the retreat varied will be looked into.

Another question was raised if the guild would function better if the “year” was switched to the calendar year, January to December. The logistics to do this will be checked into.

Reports:

Shelley Claus reminded us the guild retreat will be April 3-6, 2025 at the Compass Center in Mount Calm, TX The cost for 2 nights is $218 and for 3 nights is $327.

Ann Houpt brought us up to date on NTQF booth status. Volunteers are needed to set up, work in the booth and break down the booth. Contact Ann if it's possible for you to volunteer.

Lynda McGee filled us in on the NTQF overall status. We have NTQF tickets. We were allotted 65 tickets and have only sold 21. The $12 price of the tickets we sell through our guild is all profit. See Shelley to get your ticket and your friend's ticket.Volunteers are still needed in most of the sections except for Check in and Check out, Molly has all the volunteers needed for that. Lynda needs volunteers to hang the quilts on Tuesday. She is asking for volunteers, either guild members or any able body will be welcome. Jonquele in mini quilts still needs volunteers to set up, work and take down. Several other volunteer opportunities are still open. If you are willing and able check the sign up at the NTQF website. Parking at the convention center will be $15, so carpool with your friends.

Dorene Joyce gave us an update on the workshops coming up. July workshop will be July 20 from 9-2 stained Glass flowers workshop with Dorene. The workshop will be held at Hollis Threads. Hollis Threads charges $5 for workshop space per person and the Workshop will be $35 with Dorene donating back to the guild’s program fund $30 per person. Artist, Lisa Thorpe will conduct a Backyard Birds Collage workshop for August on Zoom. On August 24 from 9-12. Kits are $25 and Class fee is $45. The programs for the rest of the year will be: September - installation of officers, October - a program with a workshop, November - Quilt of Valor Presentation and December - The Christmas Party.

Judy Janes asked us to step up and make NICU quilts for JPS. The quilts are in great demand. The newsletter will list the specifics.

Molly Rieswick talked to us about next year's board search. Several positions are open and if you think you might be interested or know of someone who just needs a nudge, let Molly know.

Cecilia Buckholz reported on the QOV retreat at Cactus Rose. Four of our members attended in early July. The group made 11 quilts in the four days. The group needs longarm volunteers to help get the quilts quilted. If you can help contact Cecilia.

A short break was taken.

After the break Shelly Klaus reported 33 members and 5 visitors were present.

The program tonight was the showing of the Jelly Roll Quilts we have made. We do beautiful work! Participation was at an all time high.

Marilyn Smith presented the July birthdays.

Alice Clayton led a short show and tell of quilts that were not jelly rolls.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm.
