Hello Navigators,

This coming week we will be buckling down with our academics. As I walk classrooms I see our students working hard to learn and produce amazing work. I am awe of our teachers and staff as they provide productive and relevant learning experiences for our students.

Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) Survey for Families

The following survey will provide our district with information on your experiences with OUSD. The survey data will be shared with our LCAP committee. Your feedback will be used to make recommendations to the Board of Education based on the needs of our OUSD community. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey by February 28, 2023.

Every Friday are Leader in Me clubs! See our school website for information. Ask your child about their club!

We are goal setting with students. This too is a part of the Leader in Me and a wonderful way to engage children in their learning. Ask your child about the goal(s) they have set for themselves.

Please join our PTO this year. The PTO does so much for our school and we do need your help. We know schedules are busy and there is no obligation for attending meetings or volunteering. We hope you will join to be a member and assist when/if you can.

This year every Wednesday will be a Spirit Day at Nichols. Wear blue or wear your Nichols gear. Due to a scheduling conflict the PTO was unable to sell Spirit Wear last week. Look for them after school. We will work to get consistent days and times.

Oceanside Unified School District has partnered with Care Solace to help families in need of mental health support. This services can help quickly find available services. To access this service call 888-515-0595 or visit their website at www.caresolace.com/ousd. If you have any questions about this or other school counseling services please reach out.

We are so thrilled with out STEAM program. STEAM stands for Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. We have Ms. Goulet who teaches the STEM parts of STEAM and Ms. Harmon who teaches Art. Check out the STEAM Newsletter for the latest information.

Nichols is a Leader in Me School. We practice the 7-Habits of Highly Successful People and provide leadership skills and opportunities for all! Check out this link to learn more.

The After School Achievement Program, ASAP, provides Before & After School care. If you are interested in enrolling your scholar(s), please contact ASAP by calling 760-916-5224 or emailing nichols@asaposide.com.

The Oceanside Unified School District is committed to maintaining safe and secure campuses in order to promote the health, and well-being of our students, families, and staff. The following prevention practices are in place to support the safety and security of our school.

• In September, all of our staff will participate in an Active Assailant training where we will learn and practice response protocols for keeping our students safe in the unlikely situation involving an armed intruder.
• Our school regularly practices disaster and evacuation drills with our students and staff, including a minimum of two lockdown drills per year.
• OUSD partners with the Oceanside Police Department to provide four dedicated School Resource Officers (SRO) who are trained members of the National Association of School Resource Officers. Our SROs are stationed at schools within the district, and are regular visitors on our campus. The SROs will respond to any safety issues that arise at any of our schools.
• OUSD employs a highly trained team of over 45 Campus Security who serve our middle schools, high schools, and Surfside Academy.
• This summer, our administrative and custodial team led by the Student Services Coordinator, SRO(s) and OPD SWAT Officers conducted a comprehensive campus security walkthrough.
• Our school has the Raptor Visitor Management System which tracks all visitors or volunteers entering campus. Authorized visitors are then presented with a clearly marked identification badge.
• Our school has a comprehensive Crisis Response Plan that is reviewed annually with all staff, and placed in all classrooms, that details how to safely respond to specific emergency situations.
