Shark BytesWeekly Community Updates - August 8

Dear Students and Families,

It is hard to describe the amazing energy of a first day of school. Returning students yell with joy at seeing each other or figuring out they have the same class. Our new students may feel a little lost trying to find their classes but get helped from staff and returning students. Teachers' high energy to get students engaged in community building and icebreakers. Although yesterday was a short day, it is the most packed with thirty minute classes.

I am very excited for this new school year and I hope your student had a great first two days!

Take care,

Maritza Torres

School's Policies and Procedures

Students received their Oceana School Planner this week. In this planner, students can find Oceana's policy and procedures. It is also found on our website here.

It is important that all students and families read through our policies and procedures. Students will be going through these in their advisory class and through a grade level presentation. If you have any questions, please reach out to Vice Principal Campos at jcampos@jeffersonunion.net

Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones are a major distraction from learning and socializing in schools. Our school policy is that devices are stored off and in a place that is not visible for the duration of each class time, including walking to and from the bathroom, library or counseling hall during their class time. Staff members have the option of requisitioning the device and turning it over to the front office. The student can retrieve their device at the end of the school day. If a student repeatedly fails to adhere to this policy, they should expect to turn in their device into the office every morning.

New Policy - Clearing Tardies/Absences

If a student has been mistakenly marked tardy or absent by their teacher, please have them visit the attendance clerk, Jesse, in the attendance office.

Students can request a “Clear Sheet” to take to their teacher. If the teacher confirms the error, they can sign the "Clear Sheet". The student must then return the signed sheet to Jesse, who will update the correct attendance code. Oceana's new policy is that students have two weeks to complete this process from the date of the absence or tardy.

Seniors who are interested in dropping classes for the spring semester will need to stay on top of their attendance and clear any issues that may arise in a timely manner.

New Student Orientation

On July 29th, we welcomed 9th graders to Oceana! Students were able to meet new classmates, learn about flex time and ask questions to current students. We had a theater full of students and families learning about the various programs that Oceana has to offer.

If you missed New Student Orientation, you can find the presentations and folder materials on our website.

First Day of School

Teachers and staff welcomed students back to campus yesterday! We were so excited to see the halls filled with students again. Students shared their names, pronouns and fun facts about themselves to their teachers and classmates.

Senior Sunrise

Seniors come to school early this morning to try to catch the sunrise. Of course, our Pacifica fog made it challenging but it did peak out towards the end. Students enjoyed music, food, drinks and friends as they kicked off their final school year at Oceana High School.
