Hello and happy Friday!

It was a short week here at SCS. Thursday we enjoyed an All School Meeting in honor of Martin Luther King and his work for civil rights. We watched some of his “I Have a Dream” speech from 1963 which is always very inspiring, and did a quick activity. Please ask your child about it --I'm curious what they took away from the morning.

Below are this week’s updates. We have quite a few students and staff under the weather from the flu or colds. Please rest up this weekend and take care of yourselves. Lots of handwashing and wiping down surfaces is important as well.

Stay warm and we’ll see you next week,

Tracey

The second graders enjoyed a yummy science experiment where they made ice cream! It was the perfect way to celebrate Mrs. Giroux's birthday, too!

The fourth graders enjoyed Forest Classroom today by hiking through the woods and observing squirrels and squirrel nests called "dreys."

A Note from the Nurse

Flu activity is on the rise at SCS. We have cases of flu and/or flu-like illnesses in almost every grade. The flu is a highly contagious respiratory virus. It is spread through respiratory droplets or by touching contaminated surfaces. Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body/muscle aches, chills, and headache. Remember, having a fever and just one other symptom can be the flu. This is a good time to review some prevention techniques:

  • Cough and/or sneeze into your bent elbow or a tissue

  • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently

  • Wear a facial mask when around others that are ill or if experiencing cold symptoms yourself

  • Stay home when sick (follow district guidelines)

  • Clean high-touch surfaces frequently with household disinfectants

  • Get plenty of rest (students need 8-10 hours of sleep each night - more if ill)

  • Eat a well-balanced diet

  • Drink plenty of fluids (6-8 cups of water a day)

Feel free to email Nurse Jones with any questions or call the Vermont Department of Health at 802-863-7240, option 2.

Opt-In to receive text alerts

In the case of unexpected changes in the bus schedule/route or the day’s schedule (due to inclement weather or other unexpected events), I will send a text alert out to families through our School Messenger system. We were made aware earlier this week that parents need to “opt in” to receive these texts. Please follow the steps below to register your cellphone with School Messenger if you have not been receiving my texts yet.

Transition Update from Bridport & Shoreham

In November, the ACSD Board voted to educate Shoreham and Bridport together at Bridport school beginning in August 2026. The Shoreham building will also begin a new chapter, educating preschool students. We want to share the principal update with all members of our community:

  • Jenny Urban will continue as the full-time principal at Bridport Central School, and Lashawn Whitmore-Sells will join her as a 0.5 principal.

  • Principal Whitmore-Sells will also be the preschool administrator at Shoreham, working with our preK team to stabilize and grow our early childhood programming by relocating our Bridport PreK classroom to Shoreham Elementary School, expanding preK offerings, and exploring birth-to-3 partnerships to best serve our communities.

  • Principals Urban and Whitmore-Sells both bring exceptional care for our students and staff, and we are incredibly lucky to benefit from their expertise as we move forward.

Run for School Board!

Help shape the future of education in our community! The ACSD Board will have open School Board seats this year in Bridport, Middlebury, and Salisbury. If you're interested, gather signatures* on your nominating petition and submit the petition and your Candidate Consent form to your Town Office by January 26, 2026.This is also a great time to reach out to encourage someone you think would be a great candidate! Board elections occur on Town Meeting Day, March 3, 2026. Terms are 3 years. You must be 18 or older and a resident of the respective town to run. You'll play a crucial role in enhancing our schools and advocating for every student. Learn more on the Running for School Board page of the Vermont School Board Association website.

* Petitions must be signed by 60 voters or one percent of the ACSD checklist—whichever is less. Petitions and the Candidate Consent Form are available with the links above, at your Town Hall, or the ACSD District Office (49 Charles Ave, Middlebury).
