Good Afternoon, CUSD,

It’s been a busy week, with Back to School nights across the district. Attendance at these events has been amazing and demonstrates the strong partnership between our parents and teachers, which is a key element in student success in the classroom!

This week was hot, with today being the warmest of our new school year. With only some buildings in the district air conditioned, we have established dedicated, air-conditioned Cool Zones at all of our schools. These spaces are available for teachers to take their classes if their classrooms are too uncomfortable. We actively monitor weather forecasts to determine if an early release ‘heat day’ is to be issued. Please take time to familiarize yourself with our Heat Day Release Guidelines to learn when and how an early release may be issued.

This week, an incident involving vandalism and hate speech occurred within Coronado Unified School District. Following a thorough investigation those responsible have been identified and held accountable. CUSD remains firmly committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for students and staff. Hate speech and other forms of misconduct are not tolerated and disciplinary actions are applied according to the Discipline Action Guide (DAG). While this incident is deeply concerning, it also serves as an opportunity for families to review the DAG and engage in conversations with their children about expectations for behavior at school, online, and in the community. We encourage our staff and students to report incidents directly to an adult on campus and/or via our confidential WeTip reporting system.

Our hearts are heavy as we lowered our flags to half staff this week. We extend our deepest condolences and strength to the families of Minneapolis, Minnesota who are mourning the tragedy of a school shooting in their community.

After a busy two weeks I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a three-day weekend. Stay safe, enjoy the extra day, and we will see you back on Tuesday.

As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!

  • Jason Ramos and Spencer Smith are incredibly helpful, get things done in a timely manner, communicate the process clearly... I could go on. I am so appreciative of their willingness to help with all things tech. My classroom runs much more smoothly being able to count on them.
  • Amanda Ellison: She treated both my kids with so much love and kindness they are both new to this school
  • Ms, Agrella-O'Rourke went above and beyond to make the smoothest transition into 6th grade for my twins that we could have hoped for. Her professional quality of customer service, her understanding of their needs and the efficiency of implementation of solutions was outstanding.
  • Niamh Foley: She made sure both my kids attended together to start the year right and she has no idea how blessed she made both my kids and I thank you are the best!
  • Edie McCormack has done an outstanding job helping out all throughout our campus and making sure the first week went smoothly. One of the things that makes Edie special is her willingness to step in and help whenever she sees it. We are incredibly thankful for everything she has done supporting our school.
  • Megan West took the time out of her day to make sure all returning and new students felt welcomed and were excited for their first week back to school. Megan set up balloons and posters and music all the while having four children of her own. The incredible work she does is amazing and CUSD is extremely blessed to have her.

Click here to recognize an employee or volunteer who goes above and beyond to make a difference. Those who are "caught" will receive a copy of the positive words that were shared about them and a "Caught Being Awesome" decal. Please take a minute or two to brighten someone else's day!
