Back to School Back to School

Dear Highlander Charter Families & Guardians,

I hope you all had a wonderful summer filled with relaxation and rejuvenation. We are excited to welcome your children back! As I fully step into this role, I am energized and ready to collaborate with you on the exciting work ahead.

I am looking forward to kick starting the new school year with an optimistic outlook! Although we faced some challenges ending the school year, we are determined to overcome them, together. Highlander is currently hiring for several positions at both campuses, and we are committed to finding the perfect candidates who share our mission, vision, and values. Stay connected with us on social media, Facebook: Highlander Charter School and help us spread the word about these exciting opportunities!

While our financial situation may present challenges, we see it as an opportunity to strengthen our community through advocacy, an essential component of our mission. It is crucial for us to come together and advocate for fair funding policies for charters. I am currently collaborating with the League of Charters and our Board of Trustees to develop a strategic advocacy plan. Together, we can make a positive impact and secure the resources we need to thrive.

Additionally, you all received a message on Class Dojo regarding the seriousness of our move to Warren. This move is a crucial step forward for Highlander, as the time has come for us to make every effort to return to Providence. We are partnering with the Advocacy Solutions Group, the City of Providence, and our Board of Trustees to create an advocacy plan that values the input of our families and community. Additionally, we are working hard to secure the financial resources needed for the renovations at the Feinstein School. For these reasons the September Council meeting has been postponed. Tatiana will continue to reach out to collaborate with all of you on our family advocacy plan.

I also am committed to exploring new possibilities for Highlander and always looking for ways to increase family engagement. Recently, we had a productive day of professional development where we revisited our core principles and began shaping our vision for instruction and the profile of a Highlander graduate. However, this work cannot be done without the valuable input and support of our families. This year, in collaboration with Tatiana Iezzi, our Family Engagement Coordinator, we will be hosting parent and community "Justice Talks" to facilitate ongoing discussions that amplify family voices in shaping decisions at our school. Our first session is scheduled for Thursday, September 12th from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm, focusing on our mission, vision, and values. To prepare for the meeting, please watch this video about the Highlander Folk School, our namesake and RSVP by completing thisJustice Talks RSVP form by Monday, September 9th.

I am looking forward to this chapter, together. Below, please find important back to school updates from each campus. Principals will be sending individual campus updates over the next few weeks.

In partnership,

Simona Simpson-Thomas

Lower School Update

  • Start of the day is now 7:55. We look forward to seeing all the students at arrival. Dismissal is at 2:45pm
  • Crocs No Crocs for the Providence Campus. We have seen too many injuries on the playground with students wearing Crocs.

  • Attendance - For clarity, if a student is picked up early, before 2:30 it is considered an absence according to the Rhode Island Department of Education. Also, if a student is going to be arriving after 11:00, they must have a doctor's note.

  • Nurse - We have a new nurse, Ms. Julia Vaca. She will be on the playground collecting student medications, inhalers and epi-pens the 1st day of school.

Middle/High School Update

  • School Hours 7:20am - 2:00pm

  • Staffing - We are currently in the hiring process for a few staffing vacancies. Several teachers volunteered to take on these classes and the admin will also be teaching a few classes for a short period of time

  • Chroomebooks - Students are responsible for bringing a charged chromebook and their charger everyday to school.

  • Skyward - please check Skyward for information regarding advisor, scheduling, and transportation.
