Ms. Newton's Notes

Happy Monday!

We would like to thank every teacher, parent, and volunteer for the amazing celebrations of Black History. Many of our teachers took the lead in ensuring that our school community had rich learning experiences and visuals to highlight and sustain the understanding of the many contributions and innovations of so many people of color. My hope is that we can make a commitment to broadening what we teach our children about history to include the contributions of all people at all times. magine the level of enlightenment that would be present for us all! This is the kind of comprehensive, community-based approach that fills me with hope for better, brighter stories in the future.

“Won’t it be wonderful when black history and Native American history and Jewish history and all of U.S. history is taught from one book. Just U.S. history.” —Maya Angelou

Walk & Roll – Tuesday March 10th

In celebration of GA Walk & Roll to School Day, we’ll be handing out extra incentives to all Walkers & Rollers in addition to the numbered certificates as part of our monthly Walk & Roll book drawing. If you cannot walk all the way, consider driving to Harmony Park (corner of Mead, Oakview, and Eastlake) and walk the final 0.4 miles. There are plenty of parking spots around that area, and you’ll be sure to meet many other families doing the same. Additional 'Stop, Drop, and Walk' routes to F.Ave are found here (https://www.csdecatur.net/Page/1647). If you must drive, please be extra cautious that morning, as there will be lots of extra children walking or riding their bikes. Give them extra room (remember, a 3 foot distance is the law, but more is always better!), as they might not be as sturdy or mindful on their bikes as adults.

If you have any questions, please contact: kendallhamilton@bellsouth.net

Bike Month Poster Contest

May is National Bike Month and the Decatur Safe Routes to School program invites children in grades K-8 to participate in the 5th annual Bike to School Month poster contest. This year's theme is "Why I Ride." Poster artwork is due to the child's school no later than 8 a.m. on March 10, 2020 (Though the entry form indicates the due date is March 6, F.Ave Bike Dudes will collect all the entries immediately following the GA Walk and Roll to School Day event on March 10). Each school will select their top three posters and a panel of judges will select the system-wide winners and announce in early April. Judging will be based on creativity, inclusion of theme, and originality. For more information and the entry form, click here. The winners will receive gift certificates from Little Shop of Stories, artwork will be made into posters to be displayed in May, and winners will be recognized at a City Commission Meeting in May and in the Decatur FOCUS Magazine.

Important UPDATE for Passive Fundraising

It’s super easy to earn money for our school when you shop at some of your favorite spots, like Publix, Amazon and Kroger (see below for full details). But, our school name has been updated to "The Academy at 5th Avenue PTO". To ensure funds are being directed to F.Ave, please log into your respective shopping accounts and look for our updated school name.

How you can support the F.AVE PTO with very little effort:

  1. AmazonSmile - Go to smile.amazon.com and, using your existing Amazon account, select The Academy at 5th Avenue PTO as your charitable organization.

  2. Publix - No more keychain! Follow these easy instructions.

  3. Box Tops - Box Tops have gone digital!! Download the App, Box Tops for Education. Enter your information, select our school, scan receipts and done! If you still have hard copy box tops, we are still collecting them in the box in front of the Media Center. There is a box labeled Box Tops for Education.

  4. Kroger - Register your Kroger Plus Card online and click on "enroll."
