PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK CALENDAR

From the Principal’s Desk
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." — Nelson Mandela
To my beloved Brooklyn Middle STEAM School Community,
As the school year draws to a close, I find myself sitting down to write a message I have anticipated for some time, yet feel completely unprepared to deliver. After 36 years in education—29 of which have been spent right here at BMS—I will be retiring at the end of this term.
A Journey of a Lifetime
When I first stepped into the halls of Brooklyn Middle, I knew this place was unique. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving as your Counselor, Assistant Principal, and finally, your Principal.
Throughout these 29 years, I have witnessed the evolution of our STEAM programs and the growth of our campus, but the most rewarding part has been the people. I have worked with four generations of students and families. There is no greater professional honor than seeing a former student return as a parent—or even a grandparent—and knowing that we share a common history rooted in this school.
Lessons Learned at BMS
BMS has been more than a workplace; it has been my greatest classroom.
- Personally: You have taught me resilience, the power of diversity, and the importance of showing up for one another.
- Professionally: I have been inspired daily by our educators' innovation and our students' curiosity.
This community has truly meant the world to me. You have challenged me, supported me, and helped me grow into the leader and person I am today.
The Value of Family
As many of you know, family is the value I hold above all others. While my BMS "school family" has occupied a massive piece of my heart for nearly three decades, I am looking forward to dedicating more time to my family in this next chapter of life.
Final Thoughts
Though I am stepping away from the desk, a piece of my spirit will always remain at Brooklyn Middle STEAM School. Thank you for trusting me with your children, for partnering with me through the challenges, and for celebrating the triumphs alongside me.
It has been an absolute honor to serve you.
With deep gratitude and Bulldog pride,
Thank you,
Kim Monette
Principal
MEET OUR NEW PRINCIPAL
STUDENT EARLY PICK-UP PROCEDURES
If you need to pick your student up early from school, please review the options below to help ensure a smooth and efficient process:
Option 1 (Preferred):
Send a written note with your student to school indicating the reason for early dismissal and the time you will be picking them up.
- Your student should bring the note to the front office upon arrival in the morning.
- A pass will be issued so they can leave class at the appropriate time and be ready when you arrive.
Option 2:
Call the school office as soon as you know your student will need to leave early.
- We will do our best to send a pass and have your student ready at the requested time.
PLEASE DO LATE DAY PICK-UPS PRIOR TO 2:15PM. PICK-UPS AFTER 2:15 CAN NOT BE GUARANTEED AS IT IS CLOSE TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY AND A VERY BUSY TIME IN THE OFFICE.
PC SPORTS – EARLY RELEASE FOR GAMES
If your student needs to leave school early for a PC game or match, parent/guardian permission is required.
- Coaches are not permitted to excuse students from school.
- Please send a note with your student in the morning indicating the sport and the time they need to leave.
- The school will verify dismissal times with PC Athletics to ensure your student is released on time.
STEAM Highlights
STEAM Creativity/Multicultural Fair
Our Multicultural & STEAM Creativity Fair brought the building to life with energy, talent, and community—featuring incredible student STEAM projects, live rock band performances, powerful spoken word, a beautiful Hmong dance, and an unforgettable show from the Brooklyn Park Lion’s Drumline. Our Culinary Arts students added to the experience with delicious desserts from around the world and baked goods for sale, and we were proud to highlight Hmong authors sharing their stories and voices. With food trucks, packed hallways, and families coming together, it was a vibrant celebration of creativity and culture. Thank you to everyone who showed up and made the night so memorable!
Art: Mindfulness Clay Artist Experience
We had an amazing opportunity to welcome a professional clay artist, Rhonda Willers to work with our students in a unique, hands-on experience. Students participated in a guided session focused on mindfulness, meditation, and gratitude using clay as a creative outlet. They also heard directly from the artist about her journey, her process, and the work she creates. It was a great chance for students to slow down, reflect, and explore creativity in a meaningful way while learning from a working artist.
6th MN Studies: Water Wheel Challenge
6th MN Studies are dived into hands-on engineering with the STEAM Water Wheel Challenge using the engineering design process! Students designed and built their own water wheels, using flowing rice to generate enough energy to lift weight—putting their problem-solving skills to the test.
7th Grade: MN Zoo Field Trip
7th graders had a great day exploring the MN Zoo! Students observed animal habitats, behaviors, and adaptations up close, bringing their learning to life.
Students then took what they’ve learned and designed and engineered their own habitats to showcase at the STEAM Creativity Fair.
8th Grade Global Studies: Cortés Trial
8th grade students participated in a mock trial of Hernán Cortés, taking on roles as attorneys, jurors, members of the Aztec community, and Cortés’s men to debate the actions and impact of Cortés during the Spanish conquest. Using historical evidence and different perspectives, students examined the events from multiple viewpoints while practicing discussion, debate, and critical thinking.
6th Grade Field Trip: MN History Center
6th graders had a great day at the Minnesota History Center! After learning about Minnesota in class, students explored the exhibits and brought their learning to life—discovering the people, places, and events that shaped our state. It was a fun day of curiosity, exploration, and hands-on learning!

TRANSPORTATION
If you have any questions regarding your students transportation please go to https://www.district279.org/services/transportation or call 763-391-7244.
FirstView bus tracking app and opt in procedure
Existing riders from 2025-26 will only need to declare changes to their needs. If your student currently rides the bus from a stop near your residence or a daycare site and will use that same location for transportation in 2025-26, no action is required, and your student will be routed from that same location. Final bus information will be sent out by email one week prior to the first day of school.
If your student’s needs are changing, please email BusQuestions@District279.org to request a change form. Forms are student specific; please include each student requiring changes in your email correspondence.
The FirstView bus tracking app can be used to track buses, which uses GPS to track your students' bus arrival.
Learn more at district279.org/departments/transportation.
CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
No cell phones allowed during the academic school day.
Students are discouraged from bringing cell phones or other electronic devices including smart watches, headphones and earbuds/air pods to school. If students choose to bring a cell phone/device to school the expectations are the cell phones, electronic devices including smart watches and earbuds/air pods will remain in the student backpacks/lockers during the academic school day, including lunch, passing times and other non-instructional time. Students assume the risk of damage, theft or loss when choosing to bring a phone or device to school. Cell phone use of any kind is not permitted in locker rooms or bathrooms.
The following consequences are cumulative starting the first day of school and they do not reset until the following school year:
· Initial Warning: The first time staff witnesses a device during the academic day when not permitted, staff will provide the student a warning and allow the student to put the phone away. If the student does not put the phone away, it will be considered a First Offense.
· First Offense: Staff member turns the device into the front office for the remainder of the school day. Student picks up the device at the end of the day. If a student refuses to turn in to the teacher or front office, it will be considered a Second Offense.
· Second Offense: Staff member turns the device into the front office for the remainder of the school day. Parent or guardian is contacted about the offense and student picks up the device at the end of the day. If a student refuses to turn in to the teacher or front office, it will be considered a Third Offense.
· Third Offense: Staff member turns the device into the front office for the remainder of the school day. Parent picks up the device. If a student refuses to turn in to the teacher or front office, it will be considered a Fourth Offense.
· Fourth Offense: Individual call phone plan created for that student. Phone no longer allowed on site.
Students who require the use of cell phones or other electronic devices as reflected in the students IEP or 504 plan may have their device with them at the times designated, but must adhere to all other expectations of the cell phone policy.
Student personal electronic devices are subject to search upon reasonable suspicion that the device has been used in a manner that violates the law or District Policy 505.
