OUR FIFTH GRADE EAGLES AT OUR EAGLE RUN! OUR FIFTH GRADE EAGLES AT OUR EAGLE RUN!

CONGRATULATIONS JULIAN CURTISS! CONGRATULATIONS JULIAN CURTISS!

Dear Julian Curtiss Families,

Wow! What a week it has been. Boosterthon staff has worked with our students all week long and the spirit is contagious. We ended the week with our EAGLE RUN TODAY! Thank you to all of our JC families that contributed to this fundraiser that will benefit our students in many ways. A majority of our Boosterthon funds go to Curriculum Enrichment which includes author visits, assemblies and whole school events. In addition, equipment is bought for the Media Center and the gym where all students Pre-k through 5 will benefit from the use.

A special thank you to Melissa Tynan who has organized and supported this event from start to finish! The results of her hard work and tremendous effort will benefit the entire school community.

Thank you to Elspeth Spransy and Lisa Flanagan for organizing a magnificent Science Night this past Wednesday. We had over 100 students and their families at Julian Curtiss enjoying hands-on science activities led by Richard Baxley, High School Science Teacher, as well as an army of High School Volunteers. Esra Murray helped curate the science station theme to ensure that each grade level would be engaged and Tara Fogel, Program coordinator for Science and Social Studies also helped to plan the evening and came to support our event! Jaqueline Fleming and Stephanie Krupa joined our army of helpers and were a huge help setting up! Greenwich Emergency Services was so generous to send an ambulance with 4 volunteers. Students were encouraged to explore every spot in the ambulance.

It was an enormous success!

We hope you enjoy your spring break and we will see you back on Tuesday, April 23rd.

Sincerely,

Trish McGuire and Matt Hartigan

REPEAT FROM LAST WEEK REPEAT FROM LAST WEEK

LAST REQUEST LAST REQUEST

Dear Julian Curtiss Families,

Our teachers will soon begin the class placement process for the 2024-2025 school year. We make class placement decisions based on the best interest of all children in the class and ask you to continue to trust our professional judgment in determining class placements. Our teachers see the full picture of learning styles, needs, and personalities when they are developing class make-up. Having said this, we do value input from parents as you are aware of the various teaching styles in your child’s academic career.

In accordance with Board of Education practice, The building principal will have the responsibility and the authority for the assignment of each student to his or her class and, therefore, his or her teacher with the best interests of the child in mind. The principals will not take requests to place children with particular teachers. The parent(s) will have the opportunity to inform the principal or designee in the spring prior to classroom assignments concerning the child's learning style, specialties and difficulties, and particular needs, personal or educational. The parent(s) is/are also encouraged to discuss with the principal the child's progress in the fall once classes are underway. However, the principal will make the final determination in placing all children.

To assist us in making this process easier during this time we have created an electronic survey with some questions for you to answer. If there is something imperative you feel would benefit our staff in the placement process, please provide us this information in the comments. We ask for surveys to be completed by April 26th. Please remember your letter should not contain a request for a specific teacher.

Additionally, placement with a teacher that an older sibling had will not be automatic. All children have different needs and it is not a foregone conclusion that having a student placed with the same teacher as a sibling will be the best possible placement. We take each child’s academic and social-emotional needs into account when determining placement, therefore having a teacher you are familiar with may or may not be in the child’s best interest. It is important to note, teachers will reference these letters during the placement process, and I ask you to refrain from writing any negative comments about a particular teacher. Similarly, while there are occasions when it is necessary to ensure particular students not be placed together, we ask you to keep your peer requests to a minimum. It is vital for children to continue to develop new friendships at the elementary level.

Should you hear of new families moving into your neighborhood, please encourage them to contact Lisa Maniscalco (lisa_maniscalco@greenwich.k12.ct.us) to register their children as soon as possible to ensure we have accurate enrollment projections.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support. All surveys must be received by April 26, 2024. Formulating class lists is a lengthy process, therefore any letters coming in after this date will not be considered.

Sincerely,

Trish McGuire

From trying it out, to free flowing, to more intentional designs, our JC creators are making steady progress in 3D Design. With a 3D pen, students draw a raised graphic on a piece of paper or any flat surface. But what makes a 3D pen truly unique is its ability to “draw” in mid-air, allowing you to instantly form 3D structures right in front of you, which you can pick up and hold in your hand.

We're currently running a 3D Design with 3D Pens Challenge in our Library Media Center, and our creators have been eager to share their designs with the broader JC community. Kudos to all students who have taken on the initiative to push themselves as learners!

Julian Curtiss The Greatest Podcast
open_in_new zoom_out_map

Some of our JC Grade 5 Eagles have been busy in the Studio this year, spending early morning, recess and Makerspace time. Our Podcasters are thrilled to share with our extended learning community their latest episode of Julian Curtiss The Greatest Podcast: An Interview with Adopt-A-Dog, an organization with a "mission is to save, secure, socialize, and find loving homes for the most vulnerable, unwanted, and abandoned dogs."

Our Podcasters conceptualized, organized, and managed the entire creative process. Please listen in, and follow our creative learners. We would like to extend our gratitude to Ms. Arlene Laccetti, our Library Media Assistant and a truly dog-lover extraordinaire, for reaching out, coordinating, and making the interview possible.

The month of March into the first week of April signals college hoops and that in turn brings in March Madness: Tournament of Books, a school-wide reading program using brackets consisting of 16 picture books with a cohesive theme. Students and teachers alike are excited about reading and voting for their favorite picture books in the bracket as they follow their favorites move to Elite Eight, Final Four, and Championship! Our theme at JC this year was Chickens!

Over the past month, our students read a variety of books under the Chicken theme and using their voice and choice, voted on the most favorite chicken book at JC! Please welcome Surfer Chick, an award-winning picture book highlighting perseverance and gaining confidence, by the author Kristy Dempsey and New York Times bestselling illustrator Henry Cole.

GREENWICH GREEN & CLEAN

SPRING BEACH CLEANUP

along with

LIVE LIKE LUKE

SATURDAY, APRIL 27, from 9 am to 1 pm – Join us at Greenwich Point to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up the winter’s trash. This event honors Luke Meyers, GHS environmental activist who lost his battle with cancer in 2019. His mother, Kerry Meyers, noted that Luke was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his remarkable creativity, his passion for learning and his determination to make positive changes in the world.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has honored Luke by installing a climate change education exhibit at the Bruce Museum Seaside Center. He wanted the exhibit to focus on sea-level rise and its impact on Long Island Sound marine life and to increase awareness of what actions can be taken to slow down global warming.

All non-biodegradable debris will be tallied and reported to Save the Sound for submission to the Ocean Conservancy which coordinates results from organizations throughout the world to analyze the pollution in the earth’s waters.
