Taking the bus?

If you are planning on taking the bus to and from SHS, consider downloading the Here Comes the Bus app:

Know when your bus is approaching your stop. Here Comes the Bus® app is a school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving them real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping them get to the bus stop on time. Here Comes the Bus® utilizes our GPS data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet or smartphone.

Please go to the Here Comes the Bus page on the SCPS website located here for more information and directions on how to download, login, and create an account.

Important Notice Regarding Student Cell Phones

Earlier in July, Governor Youngkin issued Executive Order #33 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to provide guidance to school divisions to establish a cell phone-free education to promote the health and safety of Virginia’s K-12 students. Read the full executive order.

The current Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) policy, included in the Student Code of Conduct, prohibits the use of personal electronic devices by students during the academic day but allows principals to allow or restrict the use of cell phones and personal electronic devices.

To ensure consistent practices for 2024-2025, all SCPS high schools will follow the cell phone guidelines listed below during the instructional school day:

  • During class, all students should be focused on instruction. Personal cell phone devices are to be silenced and out of sight during class periods - from tardy bell to the bell ending class. No earbuds/AirPods/headphones may be in sight during class periods as well.

  • If a student leaves class, perhaps to go to the restroom, they may not use their device.

  • Students may use their smartphone/cell phone during class change.

  • Students may use their smartphone/cell phone during lunchtime inside the cafeteria only.

  • Students may use their smartphone/cell phone after school.

The VDOE plans to share draft cell-phone-free policy guidance to school divisions on August 15, 2024. It is important to note that once a new policy is approved by the Spotsylvania County School Board, it may be necessary to modify the expectations.

We appreciate the willingness of all to support and meet these expectations.

An Important Message from Instructional Technology:

We have made some updates to improve our instructional technology systems for the upcoming school year.

Changes to Student PIN Numbers:

  • All returning students’ PIN numbers have changed. A "3" has been added to the beginning of each student's PIN, resulting in a six-digit number. For example, if the previous PIN was 12345, it is now 312345.

  • Passwords for Google (Chromebook) and network access will now be “scpspin”

  • New students will receive their PIN once they return to school.

  • PINs will be available in ParentVue and StudentVue under the student info tab.

  • New Pins will take effect on Aug 7th.

For Students Who Kept Their Devices Over the Summer:

  • Turn on the Chromebook and connect it to your home Wi-Fi.

  • Have your child log in to their school account using the new password and leave the device on for 30 minutes. This will ensure the device is up to date with the latest security patches and settings.

  • Please ensure your child completes these steps to make sure their Chromebook is ready for the first day of school.

If there are any issues:

  • Have your child report any problems to the school tech team upon their return.

Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to a great school year!

Drills

As we start our school year, please be aware that SHS will be conducting multiple fire drills and lockdown drills in the first 20 days of school as required.

Information About Schedule Changes

This year, SCPS has adjusted our schedule change procedures in order to maximize the teaching staff that we have in each building. With the new procedure, the last day for students to make a change to their course requests was the last day of school, May 23, 2024. This has allowed for each building to build a master schedule that accurately reflects the needs of our students while intentionally utilizing the staff available at each school in order to maintain smaller classroom sizes and reduce the disruption to student learning in the first few weeks of the school year.

Students are still permitted to make a schedule change if there is a scheduling error (missing a block, two courses scheduled for the same time, schedule includes a course the student has already earned credit in, student has not met the prerequisite for a course, student has earned an F with a scheduled teacher in a previous year). Scheduling errors do not include: student has changed their mind, requesting a teacher change, changing a course to be in class with a peer, changing a class to switch lunch blocks, or being placed in an alternative elective as chosen by the student.

Additionally at the first 9 week interim, students will be permitted to request to drop a course for a study hall or decrease the level of a course (ie. AP to Honors; Honors to Standard) based on seat availability. To request a course drop or level change, students must sign into their school email to access and complete the google form. Schedule change requests require approval from the school counselor and administrator. Requests to change level will not be approved after the first 9 weeks due to pacing and curriculum guides. The school counselors will not be making schedule changes during back to school night. They will be available for a meet and greet only.
