Dear MSE Families,

October is here, and with it comes cooler temperatures, colorful leaves, and lots of exciting learning and activities at MSE! As the weather begins to change, we want to remind families that Kansas weather can change drastically from one day to the next. Please make sure your child comes to school prepared for outdoor recess with a jacket, sweatshirt, or other warm clothing as temperatures begin to drop.

We also encourage you to label your child's jackets, sweatshirts, hats, and other personal items with their first and last name. Our lost-and-found tends to grow quickly, and having your child's name on belongings makes it much easier for us to return them to their owner!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Our Parent-Teacher Conferences are an important opportunity to connect with your child's teacher, celebrate their growth, and work together to support their continued success. Before your conference, consider thinking about questions that will help you have a deeper conversation about your child's learning. Here are three questions you might ask:

  • What is one area where you have seen my child grow the most this year?

  • What is one skill or area of learning my child should continue to work on, and how can we support that at home?

  • What can you tell me about how my child participates, learns, and interacts with others in the classroom?

We look forward to partnering with you during conferences! While you are at school, be sure to take some time to visit our Book Fair. We would love for our Wolfpack families to take advantage of this opportunity to find some great new books to enjoy at home!

October Reminders

Fall Picture Retakes: October 20

Fall Party & Costume Parade: Friday, October 30

We are looking forward to a fun-filled October at MSE! Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping us make our school a place where every member of our Wolfpack feels respected, responsible, and safe.

Have a wonderful October, Wolfpack families!

Thank you,

Carrie Thrash

Hello Maize South Families!

As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our students and staff safe, we will practice a modified lockdown procedure this month. This practice will be intentionally designed to cause minimal disruption to our students’ learning day and will be handled in a calm, age appropriate manner. These procedures are helpful for a variety of situations, including medical emergencies or other circumstances when students may need to remain safely in their classrooms while continuing with their regular activities. Our goal is simply to help students and staff feel prepared, know what to do, and continue learning in a calm and comfortable environment. Thank you for partnering with us as we work together to make our school a safe, caring, and welcoming place for every child!

Hello Everyone,

I first want to say that all of your kids were ALL STARS during the SIT-UP & PACER test! I am super proud of each and every one of them. They worked hard, pushed themselves, and did an amazing job!

We are currently finishing up our Volleyball Unit. We have been working on our passing, serving, and spacing skills. Ask your child what the word “volley” means and see if they can tell you the two types of passes they have been practicing. You can also ask them what an underhand serve looks like.

If you are looking for a fun family activity to do inside or outside, grab a ball and volley it back and forth with your child! It is a great way to practice their skills while spending some quality family time together.

After our volleyball unit, we will be starting our Football Unit. The kids will be learning and practicing kicking, throwing, and catching skills.

Towards the end of October, we will be getting spooky with some fun Halloween games and stations! The kids really enjoy this time of year because the gym gets decorated and we turn our activities into a fun, Halloween-themed experience.

Thank you for continuing to encourage your kids and support them in being active, trying their best, and having fun!

Kind Regards,

Rachel LaBarge

Substitutes

There is always a need for substitute teachers. On any given day, Maize will utilize 30-130 licensed substitute teachers across the district. Some of these individuals take long term assignments and others work one day a month. Any amount of time is beneficial.

You select the assignment you want based on your schedule, preferred grade level or school.

School Reminders School Reminders

Inclement Weather Snow Day Notifications

In the event of school being dismissed or canceled because of inclement weather, the district will send out an e-mail, phone notification, and for those who have opted to receive them, a text message to the primary contact associated with both Family 1 and Family 2, if applicable, for each student. Those phone notifications will go out as early as 5:30 a.m. on the day of the closure. If a decision is made the night before to call off school, calls and texts will go out no later than 10:30 p.m.

Please remember, traffic laws remain in effect and will be enforced during drop off and pick up. While I know it is tough to keep little ones in their seats to wait, they must be in their proper child restraint system before your vehicle moves.

For more information on passenger safety

Transportation Changes:

If you need to make a change to your child’s after-school transportation, please get in touch with both your child’s classroom teacher and the school office secretaries before 2:00 PM. No transportation changes will be made after 2:00 PM.

Parent Pick-Up Safety Procedures & QR Request:

To continue ensuring the safety of all students, we are increasing our safety measures during the parent pick-up process. Beginning Monday, September 8th, the following procedures will be in place:

  • QR Codes Required: Any individual who comes through the pick-up line without a QR code will be asked to park and wait until the parent pick-up process is complete. At that time, they will need to come to the office for identification.

  • Authorized Adults Only: For the safety of all children, students will only be released to individuals listed in Skyward.

  • Parent Responsibility: Parents maintain control of their child’s safety by choosing carefully who they share their child’s QR code with. Please only share this code with individuals you trust to pick up your child.

  • Need a QR Code? If you need an additional QR code, please contact your child’s classroom teacher directly.

We appreciate your cooperation and partnership in keeping our students safe. These steps will help us ensure an efficient and secure dismissal process each day.

Parent pick-up and drop off procedures

OneMa1ze Media students at the Maize Career Academy created a video to help explain and narrate the Maize South Elementary School's pick-up and drop off procedures. We encourage our families to watch.
