From Our Director

Happy October Palouse Prairie families! I am happy to continue my Director's Notes during the 25/26 school year. In my notes, I will share our Design Principle for the month, updates, and other important school systems information that needs to be shared. This edition is a VERY long one. I apologize for the length, however it contains important information I would like all parents to have. As always, feel free to call or email to schedule a time to meet.

Design Principle(s):

This month we are focusing on two Design Principles:

Success and Failure: All students need to be successful if they are to build the confidence and capacity to take risks and meet increasingly difficult challenges. But it is also important for students to learn from their failures, to persevere when things are hard, and to learn to turn disabilities into opportunities.

Responsibility for Learning: Learning is both a personal process of discovery and a social activity. Everyone learns both individually and as part of a group. Every aspect of an EL Education school encourages both children and adults to become increasingly responsible for directing their own personal and collective learning.

Book Study:

I will be hosting a book study on Raising Mentally Strong Kids by Daniel Amen and Charles Fay. The book combines the power of neuroscience with Love and Logic to grow confident, kind, responsible and resilient children and young adults. As I read this book, I noted chapters that would be beneficial to both parents and school staff. Over the next few months we will read specific chapters of this book and then meet as a community to discuss and reflect. We would love to have as many people join the book study as possible. Please share your level of interest as well as preferences on meeting times in this Book Study Interest Survey. We will plan to meet a total of three times which will most likely occur once in October, November, and December or January.

Multi Tiered Systems of Support:

We use MTSS to support all students in academic and character development. Throughout the school year, teachers assess all students for proficiency and growth toward meeting grade level standards for English Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Habits of Scholarship (Responsibility, Collaboration, and Craftsmanship) that guide students’ approach to academic learning. At the beginning of the year all K-8 students are screened using a universal screener (DIBELS) to help school staff determine which students may be at-risk for reading difficulties. This allows us to take positive and preventative measures as early as possible.

The MTSS team meets with each classroom teacher to identify students who could benefit from specific interventions. The MTSS team reviews screener assessment data, discusses students’ emerging and ongoing needs, and plans specific interventions to help students demonstrate growth in their academic and social learning.

Small group intervention starts as early as the first week of school. On October 2nd, the staff spends a PD day deeply analyzing current data to inform school wide goals, classroom goals, and individual student goals. Based on this data we form tiered intervention specific to student needs. We will be notifying parents with a letter if your student will be receiving specific intervention. In order to support your student in developing specific skills, we will offer them a daily intervention in addition to the regular literacy lessons in class. This intervention will be provided by the classroom teacher, title 1 teacher, special education teacher, or paraprofessional during your classroom’s designated small group time. The intervention time is a dedicated instructional block and students will not miss any instruction as all students in the classroom will be receiving small group instruction at this time. If you receive a notification your student is receiving intervention and are interested in learning more about MTSS and reading support your child is receiving at school please join us on October 31st 9:00-10:00 at PPCS for an annual Title I and MTSS meeting. If you aren’t able to attend at that time, you will have access to the presentation after the meeting. Please RSVP here.

Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI)

All K-3 students are assessed using the state required IRI in the fall, winter and spring. This year the state is using a new platform for these assessments (Amira ISIP). Students are assessed at the beginning of October. Once testing is complete, you will receive your students' score report. With each score report, there is a sample student score report and an explanation of how to interpret these scores. If you have questions you can contact your student’s teacher or discuss these scores at the upcoming parent-teacher conferences on October 30th or 31st.

DIBELS

DIBELS is a Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills. All students K-8 are given a Dibels assessment designated for their grade level. If you would like to read more about Dibels, I found this DIBBELS Parent Guide to be very informative for families.

IEP and 504 Plans

Sometimes students qualify for an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or a 504 based on a disability or diagnosis. I have had some families ask what the difference is between an IEP and 504. The main difference is that an IEP provides specialized academic instruction and accommodations/modifications through our special education program, and a 504 offers accommodations in the general education program. The image below can be helpful in understanding the difference.

Again, I know this was a long one. I appreciate you taking the time to read it. Cheers to a wonderful Fall season!

Warmly,
