WELCOME BACK ASSEMBLY TO BE HELD THIS FRIDAY! SPECIAL SCHEDULE!
Back To School Night!
Back To School Night takes place Wednesday, September 4th. We will be on a minimum day schedule that day. It's also a Odd Day (odd period classes: 1, 3, 5, 7), so students will definitely be coming home early that day (see the schedule at the bottom of this website to determine what time your student will come home on a minimum day).
The night begins with a welcome meeting by the Mayfair Administrative Team, followed by classroom visitations with teachers. We hope to see all of our Mayfair Families. More details will follow closer to the date of the event.
Notes from the Principal's Desk
August 26th , 2024
Dear Mayfair Students and Families,
Background on the Current Bell Schedule:
Mayfair Middle/High School transitioned to a block schedule during the 2023-24 school year after a year and a half of work with a Bell Schedule Committee. This process included several opportunities for public input through surveys, public meetings as well as feedback gathered from students.
In this second year of implementation, we continue to prioritize:
- Students' academic success
- Students' social and emotional well-being
- Addressing learning loss from the COVID-19 pandemic
- Enhancing graduation rates
- Providing equitable access to support and enrichment programs within the school day
- Reducing class time missed by student-athletes for competitions
- Increasing opportunities for students to explore elective programs
- Differentiating schedules for various grade levels to provide tailored academic support and enrichment
Significant Wins from Last Year’s Implementation:
- Embedded intervention support classes within the school day, from 8:30 AM to 3:35 PM, rather than under-utilized before or after school supports
- A 75% reduction in missed classes by student-athletes due to competitions compared to the previous year
- A new high of CTE completers, with over 25% of the graduating class of 2024 completing a CTE pathway
- A reduction in summer school enrollment from over 900 students in 2023 to just over 500 in 2024
- Decreased disciplinary infractions due to fewer passing periods and more focused academic time
- Increased ability for students to focus on other opportunities, including employment, family responsibilities, or self-care
- A reduction in tardies to class as well as a significant increase in student daily attendance (Chronic Absenteeism 19.2% in 22-23 to 12.9% in 23-24)
Additional Supports Added This Year:
- Think Together after-school program for 7th and 8th grade students
- Writing Center (Room 804) to support all students with writing across all content areas during Periods 2 and 7
- Homework Support available during Period 1 in Room 804, with plans to expand to Period 8 shortly
- Counselor Caseloads are now approaching the national average (Counselor to student ration improved from 450 to 1 in 2023-24 to approximately 280 to 1 this school year)
- Additional Embedded support (Study Skills) for students with individualized education plans
Continued Expansion and Growth of Intervention and Enrichment Opportunities:
- Expanding credit recovery opportunities within the school year to reduce the need for summer school
- Foundational math support with a focus on grades 7-9
- Increased support for literacy through Homework Support and the Writing Center
- Addition of Community Schools Specialist to support scholl and district initiatives
- Expansion of elective program access to increase career and college readiness, building capacity in the following programs:
- AVID - Advancement via Individual Determination
- CTE - Career Technical Education
- CalApps - New Course Offerings
- VAPA - Visual and Performing Arts (with support from Proposition 28 Funding)
We understand that this schedule is new to Mayfair and the Bellflower Unified School District. However, Bellflower Middle and High School are in year four of implementation, while Mayfair is in year two. We continue to learn and adjust to provide as many opportunities as possible for all of our students. We will work with families to the best of our ability to accommodate adjustments, assist with sibling schedules, adding an additional class (when available) as well as address work and transportation concerns. These ongoing changes aim to foster a supportive and enriching academic environment for all students.

Information For Middle School Students
As part of our efforts to support students in getting to class on time, using school appropriate behaviors, and maintaining passing grades, we will be having TWO events in September that we would like you all to share with your classes moving forward. Flyer attached below.
The first one is an attendance event. Students with ZERO absences and Zero tardies from Wednesday 8/21- Wednesday 9/4 will be invited out 45 min early for lunch on Friday the 6th to enjoy First Friday and get a free snow cone from the Kona Ice truck that will be on campus!! Please encourage all students if they'd like to participate in this to make sure they are on time and present for the next two weeks!!
Second, we will be having a bowling event at Bowlero on the 26th. The price is TBD, but students with 5 or less tardies, no assertive discipline and 2.5 or better will be invited to go. If money is an issue for this event, please communicate that with me and we will try to make it happen for that student. We don't want any student not going because of financial reasons.
Please encourage middle school students to work towards these events!! And also share that there will be monthly events moving forward that we would like to see them attend. With school appropriate behavior, passing grades and being in class on time and ready to learn, each student will have the opportunity to enjoy these activities!!!

Arrivals and Dismissals
Hey Monsoon! Take a look at the following map. The map shows you where you can enter during ARRIVALS in the morning.
Any student may use either of the two opened gates before school starts. The gates open 30 minutes before the start of school (School starts at 10am on Mondays and at 8:30am on Tuesdays-Thursdays). The very first day of school, August 15th, will also begin at 10am.
The gate by the Middle School Office will close when the final bell rings in the morning, and any late student will then need to enter via the Front Office only.
Hey Monsoon! Take a look at the following map. The map shows you where you can leave during DISMISSALS.
Students will be dismissed in the following manner:
Middle school students will exit the gate by the Middle School Building,
while high school student will leave from the gate next to the front office.
It is the expectation that students show their Minga ID to exit. For the first few weeks, we will use the student's schedule if the student does not have Minga downloaded onto their phone. Please see the Minga message later in this newsletter to see how students can download the Minga app onto their phone via Google Play or Apple Store.

IMPORTANT: ALL FAMILIES must complete online data confirmation through BUSD's Aeries Parent Portal for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. If you already haven't done so already, please be sure to get this completed as soon as possible. Families that haven't completed this will eventually be contacted multiple times by the school in order to ensure completion.

Minga
Mayfair Middle/High School students will utilize the app called Minga as a digital ID card. The app enables staff to create hall passes, reward students for doing well and helping others, and the digital ID card will help students have an easier time entering or leaving campus. The digital ID has a "live" interface, with a running digital clock and a moving background, thus preventing students from using a screenshot [Screenshots of ID are not permitted]. Students will utilize their school email (via Google) to log in. The app is safe to use, uses very little data, and doesn't require access to any of the information stored on your phone. If your child does not have a smartphone, don't worry - they will receive a printed ID card as well. Click here to access a quick document that shows you how to log into your school's Minga account.
2024-2025 Think Together Registration Open!
The Think Together Program is available at Mayfair is available to students of grades 7 and 8.
Counselor Breakdown by Last Names:
Importance of Attendance
Attendance is one of main indicators as to the academic and social/emotional outcomes of our students. This is why being present on a daily basis is instrumental to a child's success. Please see some of the statistics and information on the value of attending school everyday:
Did you know?
• Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation.
• Frequent absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully or facing some other difficulty.
• By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
• By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
• Missing 10%, or 2 days a month, over the course of the school year, can affect a student’s academic success.
What you can do:
1. Make school attendance a priority
• Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, on time.
• Help your children maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
• Try not to schedule dental and non-related medical appointments during the school day.
• If your children must stay home because they are sick or in quarantine, make sure they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom.
2. Help your child stay engaged
• Find out if your children feel engaged by their classes, and feel safe from bullies and other threats.
• Make sure your children are not missing class because of challenges with behavioral issues or school discipline policies.
If any of these are problems, contact the teacher and work with them to find a solution.
• Monitor you child’s academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors when necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
• Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
• Notice and support your children if they are showing signs of anxiety.
3. Communicate with the school
• Check on your child’s attendance to be sure absences are not adding up.
• Seek help from school staff, other parents or community agencies if you need support.
Paper Tutoring
Did you know that free online tutoring is being provided by the BUSD district? Students can log in to Paper using their school district's Clever accounts (which uses the student's school email/password), or they can download the Paper app!
PAPER Online Tutoring is available for all students in 4th-12th grade through their Clever account. Students may ask tutors questions through the chat feature using the PAPER APP to get help with homework, feedback on their writing, support with studying for assessments, and even help with college/scholarship essays! The APP can be found in the Google Play and Apple APP store.
Click here to register for a free parent webinar (provided in English and Spanish). If your child needs more information about how to use PAPER, they can watch the following videos for more information:
