Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at OHS
Owensboro High School is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15. This month gives us an opportunity to honor the history, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans and to learn more about the cultures represented in our school community.
At OHS, 15% of our students identify as Hispanic. We want every Red Devil to feel seen, valued, and proud of who they are. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and learning about one another helps us build a stronger sense of belonging for everyone.
During the week of September 28 through October 2, students across Owensboro Public Schools will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Week. In Advisory, our Red Devils will explore the history of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrate Hispanic foods, learn about Spanish-speaking places around the world and their unique cultures, discover Hispanic artists and their gifts, and explore sports and famous athletes across the Spanish-speaking world.
The celebration will continue at OHS during our October House Party on Thursday, October 8. We look forward to highlighting the voices and stories of our Hispanic students and families while giving all our Red Devils opportunities to learn, create, and celebrate together.
Check out the OHS Advisory Weekly Planner to follow along with Hispanic Heritage Week!
Help OHS Make Someone Smile!
Throughout September, our Red Devils found ways to show that small acts of care and kindness can make a big difference. During All in for Ag Education Week, we partnered with Miss Kentucky's Harvest for Home initiative promoting oral health and launched our September Purpose Project. Now we're inviting students, families, and community members to help us Make Someone Smile!
We are collecting dental hygiene items. Donations needed include:
- Toothbrushes
- Toothpaste
- Dental floss
- Mouthwash
- Toothbrush covers
Our donations will support The Foster Shop of Owensboro, a local organization that provides clothing, personal-care products, and other essentials to children and teens in foster care. By collecting everyday dental hygiene supplies, our Red Devils can help local youth have the products they need to care for themselves and feel confident.
Please place donations in the House collection boxes in the OHS front lobby no later than Thursday, October 8. Items will be counted during our October House Party, and House Points will be awarded for their contributions!
Let's carry the kindness of September into October and make someone smile!

School Smiles Dental Care is Coming to OHS
The School Smiles dental team will be at Owensboro High School on Monday, November 2, giving students an opportunity to receive dental care during the school day. The program is available to all OHS students at no cost.
Services available at school include cleanings, fluoride treatments, X-rays, sealants, silver diamine fluoride (SDF), fillings, crowns, and extractions. The dental team will determine which services each student needs.
If you would like your child to be seen by the dentist at school, you must complete the registration information using the QR code or by clicking the button below. We encourage families to take advantage of this convenient opportunity to support their student’s dental health.
Finish the First Quarter Strong!
The first quarter grading period at OHS ends on Thursday, October 8. With the end of the quarter approaching, we encourage students and families to check grades regularly through the Infinite Campus (IC) Parent and Student Portal. Knowing where things stand gives students time to ask questions, complete missing work, and make a plan to finish strong.
Students who need extra support can take advantage of ESS Virtual Homework Help. Whether you are working through a challenging assignment or need help understanding a concept, reach out for support before the quarter ends.
Families, please take a few minutes to review IC grades with your student. Celebrate their progress, talk through any concerns, and encourage them to connect with their teachers and use ESS Virtual Homework Help when needed.
Check IC. Ask for help. Connect with ESS Virtual Homework Help. Finish strong, Red Devils!
Digital Citizenship Week: October 19–23
At Owensboro High School, we want our Red Devils to be prepared for life in the classroom and in the digital world. During Digital Citizenship Week, October 19 - 23, students will explore what it means to use technology safely, ethically, and responsibly.
Throughout the week, Advisory lessons and schoolwide activities will focus on:
- Online safety and security: Protecting personal information, recognizing scams, and understanding digital footprints.
- Media literacy: Evaluating sources, spotting misinformation, and thinking critically about AI-generated content.
- Digital wellness: Building healthy habits around screen time, social media, and time away from devices.
- Respectful behavior: Practicing kindness online, preventing cyberbullying, and communicating with care.
Together, we can help our Red Devils lead with purpose and show respect, online and offline.
OHS Make-Up Picture Day: Thursday, October 29
OHS Make-Up Picture Day is scheduled for Thursday, October 29 for students in grades 9 - 12 who missed their school or senior pictures.
School pictures help us celebrate every Red Devil! They are used in the yearbook, Infinite Campus student profiles, and future student IDs. Having your picture taken helps keep school records current and ensures you are included in the memories of this school year.
Drape or tux photos will be taken for our seniors. Students having a drape photo taken should plan to bring or wear a tank top for the session. Senior photos will be used for the OHS Yearbook, #REDy Senior Shout-Outs, graduation recognitions, senior celebrations, and other Class of 2027 features throughout the year.
Seniors MUST schedule an appointment using the QR code or by clicking the button below. Please schedule in advance to reserve your time for senior pictures.
Students in grades 9 - 11 do not need an appointment. Student will receive directions at school about when and where to report for their pictures.
Bring your smile on October 29th, Red Devils!
Red Ribbon Week: "Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free"
OHS will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, October 26–30, with this year’s theme: “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.” This message reminds our Red Devils that choosing to live drug free is an act of leadership and courage. Everyday decisions can positively influence friends, families, and our entire community.
Red Ribbon Week began in memory of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who gave his life in the fight against drugs. Following his death in 1985, people wore red ribbons to honor his service and demonstrate their commitment to drug prevention. Today, the Red Ribbon Campaign is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug prevention campaign, bringing communities together to educate youth and encourage healthy, drug-free living.
Throughout the week, OHS students will participate in activities, spirit days, and conversations that encourage them to reflect on their choices, strengthen their support systems, and commit to living drug free. We encourage every Red Devil to take the National Red Ribbon Campaign Pledge and be part of creating a drug-free America.
Families can join the movement by talking with students about safe, healthy lifestyles, modeling positive choices at home, and taking the Red Ribbon Week Adult Pledge to support young people in living healthy, drug-free lives.
Together, we can help our Red Devils lead with purpose, make courageous choices, and make a difference.
KIP Youth Survey: Parent Permission Required
OHS students in 10th and 12th grades will have the opportunity to participate in the Kentucky Incentives for Prevention (KIP) Youth Survey in November. The survey asks about student attitudes and experiences related to topics such as substance use and school safety. Results help schools understand student needs and strengthen support for students, families, and our community.
Participation is voluntary, anonymous, and confidential. Student names are not collected, and students will not be penalized for choosing not to participate. The survey takes approximately 20 minutes and will be completed at school.
Please review the attached letter and complete the KIP Survey Permission Form by Friday, October 30, if you give your student permission to participate. Parent permission is required.
Thank you for helping us better understand, serve, and support our Red Devils!
