Dear Families,
Ice Skating Rink is such a fun addition! Huge thanks to Tim Berthiaume, Erin Davis, James Landenberger and the Fire Department for getting the ice rink ready to go last weekend. Thanks as well to Clodagh Murphy-Berthiaume and Henry Landenberger for helping out and to Rachel for getting everyone who needed to borrow skates and helmets fitted from our growing stock of equipment.
Weather and ice conditions permitting, students will be able to skate each recess. So that it is not too crowded on the ice, we plan for different groups of students to skate each recess. If your child has their own skates and helmets, it’s easiest if they leave their skates and helmets at school over the week. If not, sending the gear in each day also works better than trying to stay on top of the recess skating schedule which can change frequently depending on conditions. Also, if you have skates and helmets in good condition that your family has grown out of, we are happy to add them to our collection.
Finally, the skating rink is open to the community for free skating (no hockey or other competitive games) after school and over the weekend. Helmets and adult supervision required. Have fun. (If you plan to skate over weekends and your children need skates/helmets, please let Rachel know and we will send skates/helmets home with them for the weekend.)
Handicap parking: I’ve noticed, particularly in the morning, that parents are pulling into the handicap parking space. Please don’t. The children, mostly all future drivers, are watching. Modeling respect for these spaces is really important.
Lunch help: We need volunteers for 1/13, 1/15, 1/27 and 1/30. If any of these days work for you please let me know or sign up directly on the January/February lunch calendar. If you can schedule ahead into February, please do.
Please email me cjohnston@acsdvt.org or call if you have any questions (802-545-3301).

From the School Nurse: Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Information
The VT Department of Health is reporting a significant rise in pertussis (whooping cough), a very contagious respiratory disease that often affects school-aged children. We are not aware of any cases in ACSD, and hope the information below will help prevent and treat any cases that occur.
Symptoms & Treatment: Early symptoms look like a common cold (runny nose, low fever, mild cough) and usually appear 5-10 days after exposure. Later Symptoms can include severe coughing fits with a “whoop”, vomiting during/after coughing fits, difficulty sleeping, struggling to breathe, and rib fractures. Early treatment is crucial to prevent severe symptoms and shorten illness. Students/staff diagnosed with pertussis must complete 5 full days of antibiotics before returning to school; without antibiotics, they must stay home for 21 days from the start of the cough.
Spread & Prevention: Pertussis spreads easily through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. Help prevent illness by staying up to date on Tdap/DTap vaccines, washing hands, covering coughs, and keeping students home when sick. Good rest, nutrition, hydration, and time outdoors also support overall health.
For questions, contact your school nurse or healthcare provider, and visit ACSD’s illness guidance or www.healthvermont.gov/whoopingcough for more resources.
