WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF O. HENRY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Principal's Update - Week of April 13th- 17th
Happy Friday, Mustangs!
I enjoyed the rainy days and cooler temperatures this week and hope you did as well.
This week, we recognize our Assistant Principal, Paul Kleiman, for his outstanding leadership and dedication to O. Henry Middle School. We also celebrate Casi Cook, Project Specialist, for her unwavering commitment to supporting the students, teachers, and families of O. Henry. We are grateful for the positive impact they make on our Mustang community.
On Thursday, students completed the Reading STAAR. Eighth graders will take the Social Studies STAAR on Wednesday, April 15, and the Science STAAR on Thursday, April 16. Students should arrive at school with their Chromebooks fully charged and bring their chargers. Eighth graders will report directly to their testing locations to begin the day on Wednesday and Thursday. It will otherwise be a normal week of learning for all other Mustangs.
On Saturday, April 18, please join us for our first annual campus-wide Gardening and Beautification Event. Bring your gardening gloves and elbow grease to help clean up, spread mulch, and plant native flowers in the beds at the front of the campus. The event will take place from 8:30 AM–12:00 PM, and we will meet near the front doors along 10th Street.

Classroom Spotlight: Photography and Native Plants and Animals - Mr. Scott Gray
The Yearbook staff has successfully submitted the 2026 yearbook and is now exploring advanced photography techniques. Students created a full photo studio to produce water droplet photography, long-exposure images, and portraits.
In our popular class, Native Plants and Animals, students have been incubating several Killdeer eggs that Coach Kristine Kobs found. They have been incubating for several weeks and today one of the eggs started to hatch. If you look closely, you can see a beak poking through on the second one from the right. The eggs will go to a wildlife rehabilitation center this weekend. The center will send us pictures after the birds hatch.
Classroom Spotlight: Life Skills - Mr. Jordan Coronado
This week, Mr. Coronado’s class took a community-based field trip to Eilers Park. Students learned about the aquatic ecosystem of the Lower Colorado River and Lady Bird Lake, observed turtles, and explored their role within the food web.
Sports Spotlight: Golf - Coach Jerrod Wolfe
We are proud of our Mustang golfers who participated in the first tournament of the season. More than 20 golfers competed in the Austin High Invitational at Hancock Golf Course this past Wednesday. Way to go, Mustangs!

2026 STAAR Testing Logistics - 8th Grade Only This Week!
This Wednesday, April 15 and Thursday April 16 8th graders will take the Social Studies and Science STAAR tests. All other students will stick to their normal schedules.
Technology Needs: Before Thursday, please sit down with your child and ask them to show you that they have a working Chromebook and a working charger. If they have lost their charger, a replacement 45W or 60W USB-C charger can be purchased online from Amazon or other retailers.
Daily Schedules: Pick Up and Drop Off
Students should be on campus and ready in their testing rooms before 8:20 AM. Students should expect to spend until approximately 11:30 in their testing rooms, though they have the entire day available to them. Students may not be checked out before 11:30 AM, in order to prevent disruption to the testing environment.
Preparation at Home:
Students are encouraged to get a full night of sleep and put electronic devices away early. We recommend dressing in layers in case your testing room is too hot or too cold. Students can also bring a water bottle and non-messy snacks. After students are finished they can read a library book until the lunchtime transition.

Club Corner
MiddleMUN is fully student-run and is a smaller conference for middle schoolers to experience a real Model UN environment on a less intimidating scale. Austin HS looks forward to exciting and lively debates this year and encourages all interested delegates to sign up, regardless of Model UN experience, as the conference is very accommodating to new delegates.
We are excited to share that O. Henry Middle School is continuing its Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) program this year, and we are looking for parent volunteers who may be interested in helping lead and support this group. As an AISD employee I am no longer able to actively participate in the leadership process.
To keep FCA running successfully, we are seeking parents who would be willing to assist by helping lead meetings, facilitate discussions, or simply support our students through their presence and encouragement. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to serve and connect with students. We currently have a strong eighth grade leadership team, but I fear after this year we may struggle without proper leadership.
If you are interested or would like more information, please feel free to reply to ryan.richter@austinisd.org. We would love to talk with you about how you might get involved in a way that fits your schedule.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and our school community. We appreciate your time and consideration and hope you will consider partnering with us to make FCA a meaningful experience for our students.
Warm regards,
Ryan Richter

Teacher Tutorials
In addition to support in class, each teacher holds an hour of before school, after school, or lunch tutorials for students to get help on a concept, make up assessments, or connect in a smaller teacher to student ratio.
Expert tips for successful tutorial visits include
- Ensure your teacher knows you are coming - ideally confirm the date with them beforehand and the specific assessment or grade you need help with so they are prepared for you.
- Spend time figuring out "what you know" and "what you know you don't know." Teachers will be better equipped to help you master a learning concept if we can identify gaps.
- Come prepared with all materials - if you have a specific paper assignment, bring it. Your Chromebook should always be fully charged at the start of every school day.
- Be respectful of other students in tutorials, consider collaboration. Before and after an important assessment, there will likely be many students who need help with the same concepts. Understand that your teacher will offer as much individual assistance as they can but may work with you and your peers in a group on a concept if needed.
Daily Bell Schedules
Please make use of our Bell Schedules for planning doctor's visits, other pickups from school. These times reflect bell transitions on C Days (Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays,) and A/B Days (Wednesdays/Thursdays.)
Parent Technology FAQ
House Bill 1481 - Student Device Rules: What Parents and Students Need to Know
Grades and Attendance: Parents will find their student's grades, schedules, and other key information in the Frontline Parent Portal (access instructions linked.) While students may access content on the BLEND or Google Classroom platforms (see instructors' syllabi for more detail,) Frontline is the only official record for grades in Austin ISD.
Lunch Money in AISD: Guardians are able to deposit money into a student's account for school purchases. Guardians must make an account at https://www.schoolcafe.com/AUSTINISD
Car, Bus, Bike, and Walking Transportation
Bus Transportation: Students who take AISD buses will be picked up and dropped off on Wayside Dr on the east side of the property. The map to the side shows our bus lane. Families use the Where's the Bus through the AISD Portal or the phone app to track bus arrival times. Students pick up and drop off in the same place on Wayside Drive. Link to AISD's Bus Transportation Department homepage with contact information. Families seeking a "bus pass" to ride a route that they are not zoned to cannot be placed on routes for the first two weeks of school until space for zoned riders is confirmed. More information is available 7:45 am to 4:45 pm Monday though Friday at 512-414-0238.
Car Riders, Walkers, and Map: We understand that car dropoff can be a stressful time for families, especially at the beginning of the year for unfamiliar drivers and passengers. The map to the side shows the main drop off areas as well as the bus lane. While we do not close the street to eastbound traffic, having cars travel westbound on 10th Street is the safest option so that students do not have to cross in front of traffic or risk opening doors into traffic.
Staying on Campus Once Dropped Off: A reminder to all students, whether walkers, car riders, or bus riders, that once your mode of transportation has brought you to campus, you may not leave the campus to visit HEB, 7/11, or other locations. Students may not leave the property without being checked out by their guardian.

O. Henry Lost and Found Claim + Lost Jewelry
Additionally, the office has had a large amount of lost jewelry turned in that belongs to students. We do not leave these in the lost and found with regular items. Many times jewelry is lost and never found and we know how important jewelry is to its owner and how each piece may have a sentimental value.
