Holton Families,

April is the month when we administer the state‑wide MCA assessments. These tests provide our schools with important feedback on how students are progressing in reading, math, and science. While individual student scores are shared with parents at the beginning of each school year, the MCA assessments are primarily designed to give school and district leaders a broader view of overall progress.

Because the MCA reflects only one snapshot in time, it is not always the most useful measure of an individual child’s learning for families. As you know, a student’s performance on any given day can be influenced by many factors. However, for our schools, MCA results are an important tool for evaluating the effectiveness of our instruction. We use this data to guide staff development, instructional practices, and site improvement plans at both the building and district levels. For these reasons, it is important to us that every student does their best. We work carefully to create a testing schedule and environment that gives each child the best opportunity for success.

Our STAR assessments (formerly Scantron) are a better measure of your child’s academic growth over time. These assessments help us make instructional, professional development, and curriculum adjustments throughout the school year. As a parent, you also have access to your child’s classroom assessments and daily practice through the Campus Portal if you would like to stay informed about their ongoing progress.

Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Have a great month,

Mr. Schara

Holton Friends and Families-

It is unbelievable to think, but we have reached the 4th Quarter. The end is near! As the days grow longer, the weather improves, and students begin to spend more time outside, please remind your child that while they can see light at the end of the tunnel, there is still much to accomplish at school. Please continue to prioritize your child’s academic success. Please make sure they stay focused while in class and are getting plenty of rest while at home. Even an old man like me tends to find myself staying awake much later as the days get longer-- Then I pay for it the next day.

Speaking of the weather improving, let’s not forget to make sure our students follow the district established dress code. According to Policy 504 “Student Dress and Appearance” Appropriate clothing includes, but is not limited to, the following: Students must wear opaque (non-see-through) clothing including both a shirt or equivalent top, a skirt, pants, shorts, or equivalent bottom, and/or a dress. A student’s clothing must cover the front, back, and sides including the student’s private parts and abdomen.

I hope your child had the chance to attend at least one of our IJ Holton school dances. Our final dance was held last Friday, March 20th. What an incredible time the students had. I hope you had a chance to see some of the pictures or videos posted on social media. Thank you to the IJ Holton Student Council for sponsoring and putting on these fun, safe, and memorable events for our students. Keep up the great work!

Once again, our “Dome Day” at the Wescott Field Dome was a huge success! I hope your child shared with you some of the fun they had while they were there. I am excited to announce that our April PBIS Celebration will be another community service event. In recognition of Earth Day, the students will be assisting Austin Park and Rec by helping to clean up at a couple of our bigger park areas: Todd Park, The Bandshell Park, Lafayette Park near Marcussen, and others. While there, the students will have a chance to hang out with friends, play on the equipment, but most importantly, give back to our community that provides us so much.

At IJ Holton, we encourage our students to be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and to Do Their Best! If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please email me david.brown@austin.k12.mn.us or call me at 460-1525. 4th Quarter, Here we come!!

Planning Ahead for Student Appointments

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We kindly ask that you plan ahead when scheduling appointments for your child during the school day. To help us ensure a smooth and timely dismissal, please notify the office in advance and arrive with enough time to allow for your child to be called from class.

Your cooperation helps minimize disruptions to learning and ensures your child is ready when you arrive. Thank you for your continued support!

📞 Keep Emergency Contacts Up to Date!

To help us ensure your child’s safety, please take a moment to review and update your emergency contact information. If your phone number, address, or emergency contacts have changed recently, let us know as soon as possible. Accurate contact details help us reach you quickly in case of illness, injury, or other urgent situations.

You can update your information by logging into the parent portal.

Thank you for helping us keep our records current!

***LOST AND FOUND

Please remind your child to check the lost and found area. All items were disposed of during spring break. We get overcrowded and we lack space. We remind kids frequently to check the lost and found and instead of it downsizing it gets bigger, we don't have the space, so items get disposed of during our holiday or extended breaks.

Warm regards,

Message From the Counselors Message From the Counselors

Dear IJ Holton & Ellis Parents and Guardians,

This time of year, often brings a mix of excitement and stress for students. With warmer weather, upcoming testing, and the final stretch of the school year, it’s important to support students both academically and emotionally. Below are a few areas that can assist with navigating these challenges.

Supporting Students with their Emotions, Friendships, and Stress

Adolescence is a time when emotions can feel more intense, friendships become more complex, and academic expectations increase. Helping students build skills in these areas can make a significant difference in their confidence and overall well-being.

·

Managing Emotions

o Encourage your child to identify what they are feeling and why

o Remind them that all emotions are okay, but not all reactions are

o Help them find healthy ways to cope, such as listening to music, getting outside, or talking to a trusted adult

o Model calm responses and problem-solving at home

· Building Positive Friendships

o Talk with your child about what makes a good friend (respect, trust, kindness)

o Encourage inclusion and being open to new friendships

o Help them practice communication skills, especially during disagreements

o Remind them it’s okay to step away from friendships that feel negative or unhealthy

· Handling Stress (Especially During Testing Season)

o Encourage consistent sleep routines and limiting screen time before bed

o Make sure your child is eating regularly and starting the day with breakfast

o Teach simple stress-management techniques like deep breathing or taking short breaks

o Remind your child to focus on effort and progress, not perfection

Get Outside This Spring!

It’s important to keep the mind and body active. With the change in the weather, and longer daylight hours, it’s a great time to get outside and get the body moving. Here are a few ideas for free or inexpensive ways to get that body moving and familiarize yourself with activities in the area.

· Check out the local parks & playgrounds

· Hit the trails. Look for local walking or bike trails (including Shooting Star Trail)

· Become and angler – try fishing at Mill Pond or East Side Lake

· Connect with nature – investigate all there is to do at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center

· Become an explorer. Try walking, hiking, picnics, or playing sports outdoors

Final Thought:

As we approach the final months of the school year, this is a great time to check in with your child about their goals, progress, and overall well-being. Small conversations at home can make a big difference in helping students stay motivated, feel supported, and finish the year strong.

IJ Holton Families,

At the end of April, eight educators from Austin Public Schools will be travelling to Palm Springs, California to attend the BARR National Conference. This will include four teachers from IJ Holton, two teachers from Ellis, one school counselor from Ellis, and the BARR Coordinator. This is an incredible learning experience as we attend sessions about each of the BARR strategies. Some are led by BARR Center employees while others are led by educators from BARR schools all over the United States. I will be presenting on the implementation of I-Time and U-Time lessons at IJ Holton and Ellis.
Karen Dunbar, IJ Holton & Ellis BARR Coordinator

BARR Strategies
Focus on the whole student.
Provide professional development for teachers, counselors, and administration.
Use BARR’s U-Time Curriculum to foster a climate for learning.
Create a cohort of students.
Hold regular meetings of the cohort teacher teams.
Conduct community connect meetings.
Engage families in student learning.
Engage administrators.

Review of U-Time Sessions in March
3/5/26
Grade 5 Together We Can Build Something Extraordinary The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand that accomplishing extraordinary things requires a variety of skills, talents, and strengths. Students worked in small groups to brainstorm about places that need a team for things to go well.

Grade 6 Groupthink This lesson introduced the concept of groupthink and how it can affect people in different situations. Students were put in groups and given tasks. Later, they reflected on who the major decision-makers were and why others chose to follow their lead.

3/19/26

Grade 5 Friendship The lesson helped students identify different qualities they look for in a friendship and what qualities they bring to a friendship. The lesson started with a reading of the book, The Same but Different Too by Karl Newson.

Grade 6 I Am Students had the opportunity to reflect on and share their family traditions and customs. They created “I Am” statements and later shared them with a classmate.

3/26/26
Grade 5 “Sorry” Is Just a Word Students learned why apologizing is important and how to do it. The book, Zach Apologizes by William Mulcahy, helped this idea come to life. Students learned that sincere apologies have two parts: an acknowledgment of what they did, and an offer to make things right now and in the future.

Grade 6 It Depends on the View Students recognized that their perceptions (what they think and believe) about other people may change, depending on how they look at people or what they pay attention to.

Consistent Attendance Matters!

At Austin Public Schools, we know that showing up matters. Consistent attendance is one of the clearest predictors of a student’s success, not only in the classroom, but in life after graduation. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academically, graduate on time, and find success in college, careers, or both.

Strong attendance also tells us something important: it reflects how connected students and families/caregivers feel to their school community. When attendance drops, whether for specific groups or across the district, it often signals challenges we can help address, including school climate and engagement, as well as social, emotional, or family barriers.

That’s why we’re focused on building schools where students want to be. Through strong instruction, supportive relationships, and programs that care for the whole child, Austin Public Schools is working to ensure every student feels welcome, supported, and ready to learn each day. When students feel that connection, they show up, and when they show up, they succeed.

Please watch our new video about the importance of attendance.

Strategic Priorities Strategic Priorities

Strategic Priorities Update:

Safe and Welcoming Learning Environment:

  • Our BARR U-Time lessons are introduced by Mr. Malo every Thursday morning so we can have building wide themes.

  • Our last dance, although not as well attended was still a huge success with well over 200 students attending and very few if any behavior issues.

  • Our Crisis Team meets monthly to review any major issues or address any safety concerns

  • One safety concern we are working on with the YMCA is the Y-bus after school. The bus can only seat about 15 students and we will have up to 30 who want a ride. The remaining students have to wait for the bus to return to pick them up. We have had some concerning behavior issues as the students are not supervised during this time.

Packer Profile:

  • We continue to work on choosing artifacts for the Packer Portfolio.

  • Teachers use WIN time and Connect time when available to check student grades and missing assignments.

District wide multi-tiered systems of supports for all students:

  • Our staff is becoming more adept at using EduClimber to access student data more regularly.

  • Our PLC work and Data meetings use EduClimber weekly to adjust student groups for reading interventions.

  • Our reading interventions occur during WIN time or Connect time depending on the grade.

  • We have successfully connected our BARR meeting work with our MTSS process so we are having quality discussions about students who need support on a weekly basis; all the right people are around the table to make adjustments.

Excellence in resource managements:

  • Due to a reduction in state funding, we are making budget adjustments with staffing. We have a few teachers who are transferring to other buildings and a few transferring in. These adjustments will take place over the next few weeks.

  • We also have to make adjustments to supply budgets and ensure we are spending appropriately for things we need. We meet monthly with district personnel to report or work in these areas.
