Annessia Durbin, 6th grade counselor.

Hi! I am Ms. Durbin, the 6th Grade School Counselor for School Year 2024-2025. This is my 7th year as a School Counselor at BMS. I am excited to get to know your 6th grade student. The best part about being your student’s school counselor is that I get to be their school counselor until they leave Brooklyn Middle School. I am excited to work with your student these next three years. School Counselors work with students on their academic challenges, social/emotional needs, and college and career readiness. We do this through individual student meetings, classroom lessons, or small groups. If you are interested in additional information or having your student join one of my groups, feel free to contact me! Hoping for a great school year!

My name is Caitlin Kuntz, and I am the 7th grade counselor this year. When I am not at school, you can find me enjoying time at the lake or traveling whenever I get the chance. Exploring new places and relaxing by the water are two of my favorite things! As a counselor my primary role is to promote the academic, social, and emotional well-being of our students. Whether your student is facing challenges or celebrating successes, I am dedicated to helping them grow and reach their goals! I am looking forward to being a part of another awesome school year. Together, we can make it a great one!

Hello! I am the 8th grade School Counselor, and it has been exciting to work with your 8th grade student, most since 6th grade. As your student's counselor I want them to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. I can't wait to see what the rest of this year brings for the 8th graders as they all look forward to high school. This is an exciting year and transition that I have been so fortunate to be a part of at BMS for the last 10 years. Go Bulldogs!

SOCIAL MEDIA SAFETY GUIDE FOR FAMILIES SOCIAL MEDIA SAFETY GUIDE FOR FAMILIES

Help Your Middle Schooler Navigate Social Media Safely

As parents/guardians of middle school students, it's essential to guide your children's use of social media. These platforms offer both positive and negative aspects, so it's crucial to strike a balance. Social media can be a valuable tool for kids to connect and learn. However, it also comes with risks like cyberbullying and excessive screen time. To help your child, consider these tips:

1. Set Clear Rules:

Establish clear guidelines on how much time your child can spend on social media, which platforms they can use, and what content is appropriate. Creating and enforcing these rules will help your child understand responsibility.

2. Teach Responsibility:

Educate your child about online dangers and responsible behavior. Talk about cyberbullying, privacy concerns (is there location being shared on social media), and the responsibility of accepting consequences for choices made online. Encourage open communication so they can come to you with any concerns.

3. Keep an Eye Out:

While it's crucial to trust your child, it's equally important to monitor their online activity, especially when they're in middle school. Keep an eye on their friends, posts, and messages to ensure their safety and well-being.

4. Use Parental Controls:

Consider using parental control tools to limit access to certain apps and websites. These tools can help you manage screen time, filter content, and keep tabs on your child's online interactions.

5. Be a Role Model:

Demonstrate responsible social media use, as children often emulate their parent or guardian's behavior.

6. Encourage Offline Activities:

Promote a balance between online and offline activities, like sports, hobbies, and reading.

7. Promote Real-Life Connections:

Encourage in-person interactions with friends and meaningful conversations.

Social media can be a double-edged sword for middle school students. While it offers valuable opportunities for social interaction and learning, it also presents potential risks.

As a parent or guardian, it's your responsibility to guide and protect your child as they navigate the digital world. By setting clear boundaries, educating them about online safety, monitoring their activity, and leading by example, you can help your middle school student make the most of their online experiences while staying safe and grounded in the real world.

Makerspace

We have a new open space this year called the Makerspace! It has been a happening collaborative work space near the media center where students make, learning, explore, and share. This space provides hands on learning to help with critical thinking skills and even boost self-confidence. Check out the photos below on ways we've used this space so far this year.

Minnesota Studies

6th grade students learned what an archaeologist does and how artifacts teach us about history. They participated in a hands-on digging activity.

6th grade Minnesota Studies students also made their own petroglyphs and then carved them outside in our outdoor amphitheater space.

University of Minnesota Math Center

University of Minnesota Math Center for Educational Programs is gearing up for our upcoming Saturday Morning Math courses! This enrichment program for 5th-7th grade students lets math loving students experiment and explore mathematics with their peers. Saturday Morning Math will have five sessions, meeting once per month on the U of M campus starting in November. This year we are offering exciting explorations of board games, origami, topology, and more! Each class encourages students to explore advanced mathematics and its scientific applications from a different perspective. Our coordinators often hear, "I wish I could do this every Saturday!" at the end of our sessions.

A complete list of this year's session dates and topics can be found on our Saturday Morning Math page and below a flyer is attached with important information and links.
