Grade 3 Math MCAS
Our Grade 3 students will be participating in the Math MCAS test on Tuesday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 7. Students have reviewed how to access and navigate the test in Technology this week. Classroom teachers have reviewed sample questions and what to expect. A few things to think about when talking with your Grade 3 student about the tests:
* Students will start the test at 9:00 AM. They have as much time as they need that day to complete the test.
* Students should get a good night's sleep before the test and eat breakfast at home or at school that day.
* Candy and gum will not be allowed unless part of a student's individualized education plan.
* Electronic devices are not allowed to be used during MCAS. Smart watches and phones should be left at home on MCAS days or stored in backpacks (This is always the policy at Green Meadow.)
* MCAS provides information about how we are doing as a school. Students should try their best but should not worry about the test. They will take an MCAS test many more times over the course of their school experience.

Green Meadow End of Year Events
Book Fair Family Event
Please join us to celebrate reading at the Green Meadow Family Shopping Event on May 15, from 3:00 - 5:00 PM, in the Green Meadow Library. Students will be shopping throughout the week May 13 - May 15, with their classes. Families who prefer to shop together can do so at the event. Proceeds go to the Green Meadow Library.
K-2 Spring Concert
We are excited to host a Spring concert for our Kindergarten, First, and Second graders (Third grade will be performing at the end of year celebration). The concert will be on Friday, May 23rd, at 9 AM in the Green Meadow cafeteria. It should last for about an hour, and we encourage you to stay the whole time to hear all the different grades. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email our music teacher, Natalie Wong at nwong@maynard.k12.ma.us.
Field Day
Our annual Field Day event organized by Randy Wood, our physical education teacher, will be held at Crowe Park on Tuesday, June 3, with a rain date of Thursday, June 5. The PTO will share a volunteer sign-up. Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 will attend from 9-10:30 AM, and students in Grade 2 and Grade 3 will attend from 1:00 - 2:30 PM. Students will need to wear athletic attire (t-shirt and shorts), sneakers, and socks. We recommend a hat or sunglasses, and of course, a water bottle. All students should come to school wearing sunscreen that day.
Grade 3 Moving On Ceremony
Our traditional Grade 3 Moving On Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, at 9:00 AM. We will be celebrating their time at Green Meadow and wishing them well at Fowler. Families are invited to attend. Students will be performing some of the musical pieces they have been working on this Spring. Grade 3 teachers will share more information as the date gets closer.
Grade 3 Clap Out
We will be recognizing our third grades on the last day with the traditional Grade 3 Clap Out. Third Graders will take a last lap around the building while students and staff clap and wish them well as they transition to Fowler. Families are invited to continue to Clap Out by lining up near the Library dismissal doors. If your child will be riding the bus that day we will still have them exit from this door before joining their bus line.
Playground Reminders
The weather is getting nicer and it is wonderful to see so many families using our playground to gather and get to know each other. A few quick reminders as you supervise your children:
* Please remind children to respect the playground space and the people who are using it. Students take the Green Meadow pledge everyday to be Kind, Safe, Learners. We remind students that this is important even when teachers are not watching.
* The children are well-versed in our playground rules during the school day. If your child is using equipment in an unsafe way they can always be reminded to follow "school playground rules."
* During the school day, students do not play in the woods. This rule is in place for supervision purposes and because we are back in tick season. If your child plays in the woods after school we recommend you check them for ticks before leaving.
* Please ask children to return any big sticks or rocks to the woods before leaving the playground so it is ready to go the next day.
* Students may not climb the trees on school property. Thank you for enforcing this expectation.
Thank you for your help! Please keep the outdoor play going during the last few weeks of school.

Counselor's Corner
“We are kind. We are safe. We are learners”. Our Green Meadow motto highlights the importance of kindness within our school culture. Not only is it important to treat others with kindness, it is equally as vital to treat ourselves with kindness. This concept of self care can sometimes be confusing for kids. Here are five ways to teach the importance of self care and additional tips to help your children with basic wellness habits. Don’t forget to model your own self care! Additional SEL resources can be found on the Green Meadow Social Emotional Learning Resources website.

Green Meadow Building Update
Over the April vacation we had radon mitigation systems installed in the four classrooms that had been consistently reading above 4 pCi/L.
We are working with an HVAC company, to complete the repairs of the univents that became inoperable a couple of years back during a cold spell. Given the age of the univents, there were some additional parts discovered and still need to be repaired. This is happening as soon as possible.
We also had a different air balancing company come and perform air balancing in Kindergarten and Pre-k classrooms . However, we are waiting to complete balancing in rooms that still need to have the univents repaired.
It is believed that by repairing the univents, balancing the air flow in areas affected by radon, and installing radon mitigation systems for rooms above 4 pCi/L, that should reduce the level of detectable radon in the air.
We are completing a 48-hour radon test this weekend, and should have results by early next week, which will be shared.
