What is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement, Via, Individual Determination.
When schools partner with AVID, they receive professional development, a suite of resources, and ongoing support to ensure a lasting impact that maximizes their return on investment. Our work with schools aligns with their goals to accelerate and enhance the initiatives of our district.
AVID provides scaffolded support that educators and students use to encourage college and career readiness and success.
With AVID, school leaders have the flexibility to start small and can deepen AVID’s impact on their campus over time.
In RISD, the AVID elective is a part of every secondary campus and impacts the instructional routines of educators at 17 elementary campuses. We are committed to insisting on rigor, breaking down barriers, aligning the work and advocating for students to support the Graduate Profile and the Learning Framework.

AVID Summer Institute
65 teachers participated in AVID summer institute this summer to grow in our educator efficacy.
3 teachers led the work as a staff developer.
6 educators have joined the Certified Educator Cohort.
4 student leaders were selected to inspire teachers across the nation.
District Wide Professional Learning this Summer
AVID educators and leaders took opportunities at GROW, District Wide Days and Back to School Week to align the work and share the mission and intentions of the campus that will guide the school year and impact the students. Check out these examples of how we are leading the work and becoming stronger and clearer in how to implement AVID into our practice.
Building Relational Capacity
AVID defines Relational Capacity as the connection among individuals that develops overtime when interactions are built on respect, trust, and authenticity.
When educators connect with students and colleagues, and students connect with peers, learning and confidence are activated among all on a campus. All three connections are instrumental in helping students grow to see their capabilities and find their own way.
Check out how these educators spent their first few days of school to build relational capacity amongst their students.
Insisting on Rigor through WICOR
RISD AVID insists on rigor through WICOR.
Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading supports the teacher's craft, fills their tool box with strategies and allows for opportunities to take the content (what students need to know) and make it engaging, immersing the student into the curriculum (the how).
Explore how WICOR supports the Learning Framework and immerses students in their learning:
Writing
Students who write, deepen their understanding of the content, communicate their thinking as a content expert, competently and confidently.

Student Agency
In the AVID framework, student agency refers to a student's capacity to take ownership of their learning and future. It involves students believing in their ability to achieve their goals and then actively taking intentional steps to build relationships, persevere through challenges, and apply their academic, social, emotional, and professional knowledge and skills. Essentially, it's about students not just believing they can succeed, but also acting on that belief to reach their full potential. Here's a breakdown of what student agency looks like across RISD.
