Note from Teacher Note from Teacher

Dear Families,

We had a great week of learning in second grade! We explored characters perspectives and enjoyed learning all about Tony Sarg and his Macy's Day Balloons. We also continued working on addition within 100 and discussed how seeds disperse. I hope you have a wonderful break & Happy Thanksgiving.

Reading Practice at Home Reading Practice at Home

If you would like to support your child at home using similar material to what they will see on DIBLES, here is a list of great activities!

1. Nonsense Word Decoding (NWD):

  • Practice sounding out made-up words (e.g., pag, rit, fom) to build phonics and decoding skills.

  • Play “real or nonsense” word games—make a list of words and have your child sort them.

2. Word Reading Fluency (WRF):

  • Use flashcards or word lists with high-frequency words and practice reading them quickly.

  • Time your child for one minute and see how many words they can read correctly—make it fun like a game.

3. Oral Reading Fluency (ORF):

  • Read together every night—have your child read a page, then you read a page.

  • Reread familiar books or passages to build speed, accuracy, and confidence.

  • Ask your child to retell what happened in their own words.

4. MAZE (Reading Comprehension):

  • After reading, ask questions like “What happened first/next/last?” or “Why do you think the character did that?”

  • Practice choosing the best word to complete a sentence in context (make up simple fill-in-the-blank sentences).

More Reading at Home Ideas! More Reading at Home Ideas!

  1. Read Aloud Together: Choose a variety of books that interest your child and take turns reading aloud. This helps with fluency and comprehension. Ask questions about the story to encourage discussion.

  2. Create a Reading Corner: Set up a cozy space with their favorite books, pillows, and good lighting. Let your child choose the books they want to read.

  3. Use Phonics Games: Play games that focus on phonics and word families. For example, you can create simple word puzzles or use online phonics games designed for kids.

  4. Storytelling and Writing: Encourage your child to create their own stories. They can draw pictures and dictate their story to you, or you can write it together. This helps with their understanding of story structure and vocabulary.

  5. Interactive Reading Apps: There are many educational apps designed for early readers. Look for apps that promote phonics, word recognition, and reading comprehension.

  6. Word Building with Blocks: Use letter blocks or magnetic letters to build words together. This helps with spelling and word recognition.

  7. Sing Songs and Rhymes: Songs and nursery rhymes are great for developing phonemic awareness. Sing together and emphasize the rhyming words.

  8. Reading Challenges: Set up a reading challenge or reward system to motivate your child. For example, they can earn stickers or small rewards for finishing a book or reading a certain number of pages.

  9. Book-Based Crafts: After reading a book, do a craft related to the story. This can be drawing characters, creating a diorama, or making a storybook.

  10. Connect Stories to Real Life: Relate stories to your child's experiences or current events. For instance, if a book is about going to the zoo, plan a real or virtual visit to a zoo.

The key is to make reading enjoyable and interactive, and to integrate it into your daily routine as much as possible.

Pick Up Patrol Pick Up Patrol

Dear Families,

Please take a moment to enter or update your child’s dismissal information in PickUp Patrol. Knowing how your child is getting home each day helps ensure a smooth and safe dismissal.

It’s also important to review and update the list of individuals who are authorized to pick up your child. This helps us make sure your child is always released to the correct person. ID will checked at pick up.

Thank you so much for your attention to this important matter and for helping us keep dismissal safe and organized!

THE SCOOP ON SCHOLASTIC

WHAT ARE THESE MONTHLY BOOK FLYERS ALL ABOUT ANYWAY?

BY PLACING AN ORDER......

  1. You are showing your child that reading is important. You are showing your child that you are investing in their education and you want to see them succeed.

  2. You are extending your child’s school day out of the classroom and into your home.

  3. You are helping to build our classroom library. Every dollar you spend earns our classroom bonus points to use towards new books to read!

  4. Every month you will receive a set of reading flyers. These flyers are packed full of books that are good fit books for your child.

Most of the books are labeled with a Lexile level and an AR level so you can make sure your child will be able to read the text. If you ever have a question or if you want a book recommendation, please feel free to ask. I am more than happy to help make sure your child is reading the perfect book for them. Money can be tight, Scholastic understands. There are tons of book selections in each flier that are less than $3!
