Miller Weekly UpdateWeek of April 23, 2023

Message From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week we celebrated Autism Acceptance Week where students and staff dressed in various themed attire to show their support for autism. We also were fortunate to have the Grand Falloons present an assembly to our students on the importance of recycling and taking care of the environment.

As are reminder, The Joyanne D. Miller School will be administering the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) beginning Monday, May 1, 2023. The NJSLA is a computer-based assessment that measures student academic performance level of current grade standards in ELA and Mathematics. 5th Grade students will also be assessed in Science. The NJSLA will provide feedback to teachers, identify student areas of academic strength, and pinpoint areas where additional support may be needed.

We strongly encourage all of our students to attend school during this testing time. Please refer to the following test dates for Joyanne D. Miller School:

Grade 5 ELA – May 1, 2, & 3, 2023

Grade 5 Math – May 9, 10, & 11, 2023

Grade 4 ELA - May 4, 5, & 8, 2023

Grade 4 Math – May 12, 16, & 18, 2023

ELA and Math Make Up Testing - May 15 - 19, 2023

Grade 5 Science – May 22 -23, 2023

Science Make Up Testing May 24, 2023

Please feel free to contact your child’s school counselor or visit https://nj.mypearsonsupport.com/ForParent/ if you have any questions pertaining to the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA).

Fossils and Extinction

Mrs. Cortese and Mrs. Campbell's classes just finished a lesson on fossils and extinction. To have fun with this lesson the kids all became paleontologists and "excavated fossils." We used chocolate chip cookies as their "rock" and they had to carefully budget their supplies needed in order to make a profit on the amount of fossils (chips) they were able to excavate from their rock (cookie)!

Weather Hazards

At the end of the "Weather Hazards" unit in science, Mrs. Biren's engineers designed a hurricane proof building. The group could only use popcycle sticks, Play-Doh, tape and construction paper in their design. We tested their wind resistant buildings with water and wind (my fan!).

Camp Read Alot Day

Students in Mrs. Catania and Ms. Nagle's class celebrated a behavioral accomplishment by participating in "Camp Read Alot" Day. The classroom was set up with "tents" filled with some comforts from home where they read by flashlight, wrote and told scary stories, and enjoyed smores.

Our Towers are Growing

Our Towers are growing! Students at Miller have been involved in a schoolwide reading incentive throughout the school year called, The Tower of Books Reading Challenge. Hallways have been competing against each other to read and complete the greatest amount of books! Every 25 books completed receives a paper book spine to add to the hallway tower. Book spines represent the books completed per individual classrooms. Look how much our Towers have grown so far this school year!
