We're Excited to Announce the Release of the 2024 MN Women’s Health Report Card (MN-WHRC)

Accessing many local and national data sources can teach us about the status of women’s health in MN. However, no one source provides Minnesotans with a comprehensive review of specific indicators of women’s health. In order to paint a broad picture of how Minnesota’s women are faring, we have worked with the MN Department of Health (MDH) to comb through the latest data and compile the 2024 MN-WHRC, which provides citizens, public health professionals, policymakers, and others with a short, visual synopsis highlighting key areas of women’s health. The 2024 MN-WHRC contains updated data about greater Minnesota, Minnesota’s built environment, and much more thanks to the efforts of many, including MCH students.

New Policy Brief: State Laws on the Use of Restraints for People who are Pregnant while Incarcerated

The US incarcerates more individuals than any other nation, with over 200,000 women held in prisons and jails. However, despite the fact that 75% are within child-bearing age and approximately 4% are pregnant upon admission to prison, carceral facilities fall short of providing adequate reproductive and obstetric health care and instead prioritize security practices that threaten the health and well-being of pregnant and postpartum individuals. Members of the Justice-involved Women and Children (JIWC) Collaborative (convened by the Center) analyzed state policies on restraint use during the pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum periods.

Congratulations to:

Student Spotlight: How are Claire Felter’s and Asmeret Abraha’s Interests in Social Connectedness and Health Paving Their Paths in Their Masters Program?

#UMNMCH students Asmeret Abraha (MPH 2026) and Claire Felter (MCH 2025) describe their deployments at Leap Pediatric and Adolescent Care in St. Paul. Through literature reviews and surveys, they have worked to identify how social connectedness impacts health and how this applies to the St. Paul communities that Leap serves. They hope that their work can improve Leap Pediatric’s ability to provide interventions beyond the clinical realm. Describing their deployment, they say “We've learned how meaningful data collection and interpretation can inform real-world interventions that go beyond the clinic walls. This experience has not only strengthened our research and analytical skills but has also deepened our appreciation for patient-centered care.”

First Hormone-Free Male Birth Control Pill Clears Another Milestone

Research from the UMN College of Pharmacy, published in Communications Medicine, laid the groundwork for the first hormone-free male birth control pill to enter clinical trials. The new drug, called YCT-529, is a first-in-class, hormone-free and orally administered male contraceptive. Developed in collaboration with Columbia University in New York and YourChoice Therapeutics, YCT-529 works as a contraceptive by stopping the production of sperm and was found to be 99% effective in mouse trials.

New Pill is Effective Against Gonorrhea as Antibiotic Resistance Surges

There are an estimated 82 million new cases of gonorrhea globally each year. Gonorrhea has developed resistance to nearly all the antibiotics, which has made treatments difficult. However, a pill called gepotidacin (sold under the name of Blujepa) was recently developed by GSK and was found to be safe and effective in treating gonorrhea in a late-stage clinical trial. Gepotidacin is currently used to treat UTIs in women and girls 12 and up. If approved for gonorrhea treatment, it would become the first new class of antibiotics for the sexually transmitted infection in over two decades.

Evaluation Report: Minnesota’s Healthy Start Act

Recognizing the negative consequences of both experiencing pregnancy while incarcerated and separating incarcerated mothers from their newborns, Minnesota passed the landmark Healthy Start Act (HSA) in 2021, allowing the state’s Commissioner of Corrections to conditionally release sentenced pregnant and postpartum people into community-based alternatives for the duration of the pregnancy and up to one year postpartum. This evaluation report shares critical information about this first-of-its-kind policy, summarizing its implementation to date, highlighting main findings, and sharing recommendations for those in Minnesota and beyond.

Survey: MDH Title V Needs Assessment Community Input Survey

Every five years, MDH completes a comprehensive needs assessment to better understand the current state of health and well-being of women, children, and families in Minnesota. This process includes looking at the capacity of state and local systems to meet those needs. Share your thoughts about maternal and child health in Minnesota by filling out this survey by May 18.

The Minnesota Prison Doula Project (MnPDP) is one of the 13 new Perinatal Substance Use Disorder (SUD) practices and policies accepted into the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP) MCH Innovations Database, a searchable repository of evidence-based/informed practices and policies.

AMCHP is launching a new perinatal SUD-specific Replication Project cohort and will award $10,000 each to three organizations to replicate a new or existing perinatal SUD-focused practice or policy, like the MnPDP, featured in the database. Learn more about this experience and the projected timeline here.

If your organization would be a good fit for this unique opportunity, please complete a short interest survey by Friday, May 23 at 4:00 PM CT (survey may close early depending on the number of qualified applicants). Questions? Contact evidence@amchp.org.
