Congratulations!

Congrats to Olivia Wright and Makenna Bedogne (pictured above). These students competed Saturday, March 9th in UCA at the State History Day competition. Both students won first in their divisions and now they will go on to represent Arkansas in the National History Day competition in June.

Makenna did a documentary about the Annexation of Hawaii. She said, "The annual theme, Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, failures, and consequences, fit my topic through the debate of many political figures and the annexation."

Olivia wrote: I wrote an essay titled "The Values of Dissents in the Fight for the First Amendment Rights". I have always been passionate about First Amendments rights and how they impact United States individuals. When I discovered the concept of dissenting opinions in the judicial system, I was intrigued by their ability to make a success out of failure, which is what Justice Harlan Stone did in the 1940 Supreme Court case "Minersville v. Gobitis". He used his voice and written opinions to change Supreme Court history, and his dissent was the basis of the 1943 "West Virginia v. Barnette" case that had a different outcome in favor of Stone's dissent. Due to Stone's approach in continuing to fight for what he believed in, years of violence and persecution against Jehovah's Witnesses across the country had finally been acknowledged and dealt with. When the state competition results were in, it was uplifting to see my hard work pay off, and I can not wait for nationals!
