1. Around the School
A Note from Principal Godbey
Here are three important updates from our school community:
Update #1
Hispanic Heritage Assembly: Thank you to all the families who joined us despite the heat! Our children shined through music and dance, showing us a different side of themselves while helping us celebrate the rich heritage, lasting influence, and contributions of Hispanic people. Staff are already exploring a more comfortable space for next year so our students and families don’t melt in the sun!
Update #2
Family Survey: Each year, we ask families to complete the parent survey that accompanies the California Healthy Kids Survey. Your feedback about school safety, student well-being, and our school community helps guide improvements at La Ballona. Please take a few minutes to share your voice. Complete the survey here: California Healthy Kids Parent Survey
Update #3
School Site Council: Please welcome our newly elected parent representatives, Traci Wells and Lela Aylin! Thank you to everyone who voted. Our council brings families and staff together to review school needs, develop our school plan, and guide the use of funds to support student success.
Our School Site Council members are:
Dr. Becky Godbey, Principal
Ms. Clarice Miyamoto, Teacher, 2nd year
Mrs. Elizabeth Gonzalez, Teacher, 2nd year

No podrán usar maquillaje facial.
(No armas falsas, espadas, cuchillos, etc.)

2. Counselors' Corner!
Welcome to October! 🍂
As we settle into the school year, October gives us a wonderful opportunity to focus on building kindness, inclusion, and confidence in our children. This month, we are highlighting three important themes: Bullying Prevention Month, Disability Awareness Month, and Problem-Solving Skills.
Throughout the month, we will encourage students to recognize and celebrate differences, treat others with empathy and respect, and develop the skills they need to work through challenges. Families can reinforce these lessons at home by talking openly about kindness, practicing inclusive language, and helping children think through problems rather than immediately solving them for them.
Tips for Parents
Talk about kindness and inclusion: Ask your child how they can help others feel welcome and respected.
Discuss bullying: Encourage your child to speak up if they experience or witness bullying and remind them that telling a trusted adult is not tattling.
Celebrate differences: Help children understand that everyone has different strengths, abilities, experiences, and ways of learning.
Practice problem-solving: When your child faces a challenge, ask, “What could you try?” or “What are some possible solutions?”
Model empathy: Children learn from watching adults. Show patience, listen carefully, and demonstrate respectful ways to handle disagreements.
Praise effort and growth: Recognize your child when they persevere, ask for help, include others, or find a positive solution to a difficult situation.
