Superintendent's Update

Future Ready Day

Dr. Ison shared the positive outcomes of February 26, WHS's 'Future Ready' Day. He said the day was designed to equip students with essential skills and experiences for success beyond high school. Each grade level participated in activities tailored to their specific needs. Freshmen were focused on community service; sophomores rotated through career readiness stations, and juniors concentrated on their academic futures by taking the ACT. Seniors had a choice of job shadowing or taking the ASVAB to consider different career paths.

Curriculum Advisory Team

Dr. Ison also updated the Board on the progress of the district’s Curriculum Advisory Team. The team recently met to review social studies and foreign language course offerings (namely for Spanish), identifying necessary modifications based on emerging needs and changes in academic standards.

Senior Athletes Excel

Three WHS seniors were recognized for their recent regional and statewide achievements: Alex Amburgy, Garrett Lundy, and Levi Collins. Alex and Garrett were honored by the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the National Football Foundation’s Annual Scholar-Athlete "That’s My Boy" Award, with Alex winning the overall award—the first in WLS history. Dr. Ison also highlighted Levi Collins’ impressive performance at the State Wrestling Tournament, where he secured a 6th-place finish this past weekend.

Dr. Ison concluded his report by sharing several upcoming student events, including WHS’s Supper Club, the JH/HS Band Concert, and WHS’s “Seussical,” the Spring Musical.

WES dad and E9 Master Chief Petty Officer Will Davis, returning from Kuwait, surprised his children - 3rd grader Olivia and 5th grader Declan - on Monday, March 10 at school. Other topics mentioned include the Core Value this month - "Cooperation" and the successes of Right to Read Week, support for Lacrosse, and WHS Student Council’s Boot Scoot’in Hoedown (dance). At the February 10 Board meeting, Mrs. Huber outlined the district’s five-year facility plan, providing detailed estimates for buses, a chiller, vehicles, and bleacher projects—funded through borrowing. The debt will be repaid via the Permanent Improvement (PI) fund, sourced from inside millage and increased property value revenue. Mrs. Huber explained that borrowing preserves existing funds for essential needs like Chromebook replacements and routine maintenance.

At the March 10 Board meeting, Mrs. Huber recommended five resolutions authorizing lease-purchase financing for the following:

  1. Installation of Bleachers

  2. Acquisition of Motor Vehicles

  3. Acquisition of a Chiller and Related HVAC Equipment at WHS

  4. Acquisition of School Buses (to replace buses that are nearing the end of their service life)

  5. Financing of WLS Aggregating in Principal Amount Not to Exceed $1,400,000

The Treasurer’s items were approved.
