Mustang families, I have very exciting news to share with you! For a long time, I have been inspired by colleagues and personal experience to explore the benefits that animals can have on student learning and personal growth. About 5 and a half years ago, I found KSDS, a nonprofit based in Kansas that was the first guide and service dog school in the United States. With the support of the school district and GMS, I put myself on the KSDS waiting list for a facility dog that I hoped would one day become a part of our GMS family. And just a few weeks ago, I found out that we had been matched with a dog!! Our professionally trained facility dog will be able to offer emotional support, comfort, and companionship to students, staff, and visitors. Research shows that dogs in schools can help reduce stress, increase focus, improve academic performance, and even make students feel more comfortable and confident. Their presence is here to support everyone’s well-being and the dog may work with individual students and in classrooms. We haven't gotten the exact details about our dog yet, but he or she will either be a golden or labrador retriever and will be around two years old. I will be traveling to the KSDS campus in October to meet our dog and get trained with them. We're hoping that our dog's first day at GMS will be October 15th! If your student is uncomfortable around dogs or is allergic, please reach out to me. I will be following certain procedures to reduce allergens and will absolutely have a plan with students who do not want to be around the dog. I'll be sharing more information in the next few weeks and please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you! Go, Mustangs!
Travel Opportunities for 2026
Washington DC, Spring Break, 2026
2026 is the United State's 250th Birthday! A great way to celebrate would be to go to Washington, DC for Spring Break!
